  • Yeah, those behemoths all share responsibility for killing the mom and pop stores. It's not impossible to shop around to local variants. But probably the best solution is to learn how to kick the habit that American culture has foisted upon us all of buying endless piles of useless crap.

I cancelled my prime subscription years ago. I occassionally restart it for a month at a time if I need some esoteric hobby thing and I would be forced into paying for shipping or for prime. Then I'll watch some stuff on their streaming service. Last time I used it, it was awful. Half of the shows were gatekept behind some ad system. And the "Amazon Originals" are all just extraordinarily expensive shows with terrible writing. Uhg. I am making it a point to not have an active prime subscription when Christmas rolls around. We (the collective we, as in, humanity) don't need more garbage.

  • OneDrive is really just an alias for a networked drive that points to a cloud location and is baked into every instance of Windows. Most OneDrive instances are for personal computers and they're inaccessible to everyoen else. But you can manually share files.

SharePoint is a flexible enterprise website and fileserver for an organization to customize.

Teams is a Slack ripoff that allows employees to create teams with channels within those teams, and freeform chats. It also has a filesharing component to it.

It is awful to work around the half-dozen ways to store and share files. Really. Microsoft needs to unfuck this.

  • XM... as in the radio? That's unidirectional, low-bandwidth. It could be served by geostationary because the latency from source to receiver doesn't really matter.

However, the internet is highly transactional and thus it requires a very low latency. LEO was chosen because it is closest - the speed of light is the dominant factor for latency when comparing GST and LEO. Yes, that increases costs, but it is the only way to make the internet served by satellite be suitable for modern day use.

  • I have had some seriously bizarre cases of deja vu. Like, recalling dreams I had years before that exactly predicted a place I would be in in the future. It has happened five or six times. It does make me question things such as consciousness and my place in the universe. It also makes me wonder if my brain is broken.

  • My parents sent me to Jesus camp when I was in high school. This particular camp was one where kids would go on week long excursions. I didn't jive with the jesus stuff, but a week of camping and swimming in lakes was great.

This particular year I did a week of biking and climbing. We practiced at the rock wall and got our bearings and we were signed off by some climbing instructor. We then went on the road. Six days later, we arrived at the rock face we were to climb. We started at the top, dropped our gear, then half of us hiked down and our belays hung out on top to help us back up.

I did my climb. It was uneventful but fun. Then it was my turn to belay.

We did everything with just climbing ropes and carabiners. No additional equipment. We were to tie off onto a tree or boulder on the summit and make a particular kind of loop around ourselves that wouldn't allow it to constrict and hurt us if we were hauling the person below up the face. Nbd I get it all set up and we move on.

Well, my climbing buddy was picked randomly and it was the fat girl with homesickness. She finally stopped moaning and decided to give it a shot. I was happy for her and got ready. She hiked down and got herself ready.

"On belay!" I check my stuff, see it's good "Belay on!"

She starts climbing. But she couldn't get past the first major rock and she decided to quit. Oh well.

Then I turned around and found my support rope wasn't tied around the tree and I would've been yanked off of a 60 foot rock face the first time she slipped.

  • Oranges and tomatoes are also mostly water by weight. If you were to compare the water mass percentages of each of those fruits, you'd probably find the avocado is more efficient in calories and nutrients per water usage.
