That's an interesting read (after Googling) , especially the studies. I would love to be one of those types that says "Fake News" to anything I don't like, but the initial science seems to be there.
This is reportedly been happening in Canada too listening to some sources that say it's cheaper to deal with derailment than to maintain the tracks properly.
I find it hard to believe but we are talking about a lot of track. I can't imagine the disruptions to service and clean ups doesn't add up quickly not to mention the loss of life costs.
We saw this grow during the duration of WW1. This first Xmas (when everyone thought it would be over by then). English and German troops met in no man's land with an informal truce to bury their dead, exchange greetings, and play a little football.
Once the generals heard of this they banned all events like this from ever happening again. It's hard to fight against someone you find are much like you. The Nazis in the second War were masters of dehumanizing not only the Jews but the Russians too. They didn't treat the English and the Americans the same way for the most part.
Eventually when one has been at war long enough most of our humanity is lost. How else does one cope with such horror and depravity that comes with war?
""I think that we've seen an element of radicalisation. We have seen a group of people who take literally a thimble full of facts and make a bathtub of hateful assumptions and then conduct themselves in a way which is riotous and disruptive to our society.""
I've come across the same things in most of my travels. The worst incarnation I've seen of self check outs are the camera based self checkouts I've seen at some Circle K gas stations in the South West of the US.
I think they are too far of a jump for most normal consumers to understand. They use cameras so one can place all the items on the scan surface and it tries to calculate everything at once. Most people including myself try to scan things one at a time and it doesn't work like that as it tries to do it all at once. Eventually store staff then need to come over to help every customer or they just ring up customers in a traditional way over at the main till. In these situations I don't have enough cashier training to use these machines so I avoid them.
I love tech most of the time but I don't enjoy when tech tries to leap frog over a couple of generations than the public can handle. In these situations have staff to take customer's money. Websites dedicate resources to remove barriers to buying on a website. Why are brick and mortars adding barriers with each passing year?
Nothing grinds my gears more than having to line up and wait a long time to spend my money. I think there are some focusing too closely on the numbers and not the larger picture.
Locally especially among the rednecks, the answer is always those immigrants.
My first 2 thoughts are yeah right they came and stole your software engineering job, and what job? That back breaking one you weren't going to work in the fields anyways as crops rot away? I can't see you doing either. /s
Being in Canada when talking with very senior Canadians (from before metric times) or just People from the US, I know they are talking in American Freedom Units when it comes to this. When they say anything high 90s I suspect we aren't talking about almost boiling water. Pretty much any number above 50 and I'm fairly sure they are still talking in American.
I also know when it comes to 37 in Phoenix in the first weekend of April it's time to head back north to cooler temperatures of the mid 20s. I also know an American might think I meant Alaska with those numbers for April so it can get a little tricky there but it's only the weather and not a lab experiment.
They know the damage is done. Corrections are never visited or catch up with the lies. Thanksgiving exchanges across the dinner table won't have the right info and for many it will be deemed a great cover up by Joe and his side.
I'm reminded of the melamine that was added to dog food to boost protein numbers. It killed and harmed many pets in the US. Who in the world would expect melamine in dog food but here we are.
I suspect it will be deleted though... 😂
