  • Good idea. I haven't used my local library in awhile, but I'm worried about library funding with Trump. It's why this is the first time in a long time I looked into a book from the library. I'm using any excuse to like you said, argue their services are being actively used. It's good to hear it confirmed that it does actually help librarians and that they're encouraging that.

  • Because she's party of the administration in power and people aren't happy right now, so they blame whoever is in power even if it's not quite their fault. They don't care that the rate of inflation slowed to basically normal, they care that things are still expensive because their wages haven't risen to match the raised inflation and their savings are lower. It used to be easier for incumbents, but as the conditions in the US continue to degrade from late stage capitalism and 60 years of neoliberal policies, I have a feeling it will continue to be the opposite.

Holding the line won't work with people getting poorer every year (and if your wage doesn't match inflation or the rising costs of housing or transportation, that's what happening, you're getting poorer).

  • I've been seeing suggestions for that book a lot. I was even going to see if I can grab it from my local library, but it's just an e-book for some reason. I guess I can read it on my tablet but i prefer physical books. I do want to support my library though by using them, so it's a tough choice lol.

  • True. Paying attention to our online footprint, keeping privacy technology and encryption available will be a huge part of it. No more "if you aren't doing something wrong then you don't need to worry about it" or whatever people said that Snowden tried to point out was dumb.

  • Oh it's 100% going to suck for sure. It will be hard and difficult and painful. But our ancestors fought for unions when unions were illegal, and union busting didn't just mean saying "stop" or "you're all fired", it meant hiring private mercenaries to spray bullets into crowds and beat unarmed people with sticks. Women got the right to vote with protests and were often arrested for vandalism, arson, and all sorts of shit they did during them (and for prohibition, which I know didn't really work, but hey, they got that amendment in anyway).

And I don't even mean ancient ancestors, I mean like great grandparents. If they did it, so can we.

  • I hate to say it, because being together makes us stronger and I'd hate to need a passport to visit my friends in other states, but I think I might be with you. It's not like we've ever done anything good with our united strength anyway except for stomp around the world taking resources and sparking coups (except once in WW2). Our empire needs to crumble, like England, France, Spain, and Portgual's. It's too big, too unwieldy, too hard to make change or improve things and get consensus from this wide area. Plus, it's a lot easier to fight for our rights if we just need to travel a couple hundred miles to a state capital rather than across the country to Washington, DC or to convince Southern and Midwestern rural voters.

  • Eh, even if they do, because I do believe it's 100% possible they'll try to end democracy in all but name this cycle, I don't think Trump will even live out his full term in the next 4 years. The man looks older every rally and photo op. He can't even open doors.

Vance sucks in all the same ways every neocon sucks, so I don't think he'll be a totalitarian aberration like Trump if he's elected. He doesn't seem to have that something Trump has. I think he'll be more like Reagan or Bush. Which is awful, but I think it's something we can push through at least.

  • I blame it more on Gore and the Democrats for not fighting for democracy more. Hopefully it becomes more clear the Supreme Court is an legitimate institution and people point to increasingly inane decisions as a reason not to listen to it.

  • I so need to do this. Been at the same job for almost 10 years and it feels like everyone else I started with has surpassed me for this reason in terms of salary and position. But i hate applying for jobs in tech so much, having to do the leetcode study bullshit as if I'm still in school and all that. It's so exhausting and annoying. Maybe it's the ADHD, but it's hard to bring myself to sit down and do it.

But also, I could really use more money, it's been impossible to save for a house where I live, and I'd love to be able to have one someday. I know it's not too late, I still have so many years before I retire, but I'm still jealous of you guys that could sit down and more easily do the interview dance every 2-3 years.
