  • I hate to break it to you, but Americans are the only ones who can save America.

Nothing we do will make the slightest bit of difference if your people don't come together and save yourselves.

The rapture is not coming. There's no Superman waiting to swoop down from on high. You have to stand up and do the hard work of fixing your problems. Stop waiting for someone else to do it for you.

  • You'd be right in theory - the cost of logistics should scale with weight or volume, not price - but we've already seen from the price shocks over the last few years that in reality corporations will always take the opportunity to price gouge on any upstream change, even when it has no impact on their costs.

But even putting aside the fact that capitalism will take it's cut, you're citing the potential impact of 700% price increases, but I'm not ruling out the possibility of 7,000% increases or higher. With the potential scale of impact that we could see from climate change, and how it affects delicate ecosystems like those in which coffee grows well, that's not outside the realm of possibility.

  • Others have given the detailed answer, but the really simple one is this; "How many jungle plants grow well in deserts?" If it was simply a matter of "hot = good", surely the answer would be "all of them."

There are specific conditions that every plant requires to grow well. Some plants are more tolerant of disruption to those conditions, some less so. Climate change affects all of those conditions. Increased global temperatures can make some places hotter, some places colder, some places wetter, some places dryer, and have all sorts of other knock on effects too.

  • I'm not even asking them to be our allies. I don't need them to give a single flying fuck about us. We'll take care of ourselves if we have to. I just need them to fix their God damn country before its too late, because that's the one problem only they can solve.

  • This is exactly why Canada is refusing to lift our tariffs. We're not going to accept a pause or a reduction, or some exemptions; end the trade war, or continue the trade war. Those are the options.

  • Reminder that according to the US government's own figures, only 43lbs of fentanyl were seized at the Canadian border last year. That's less than a single suitcase.

Reminder that Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the guy who ran silk road, a dark web site that traded in vast quantities of dangerous and illegal drugs, far, far greater than the amount flowing from Canada to the US.

Reminder that the only reason Trump can impose these tariffs without congress signing off is because they're being imposed under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act which grants the president the authority to enact tariffs in response to a national emergency... Meaning Trump needs there to be an emergency in order to enact tariffs.

If you still think enjoy of this is about fentanyl you're a fucking idiot.

  • Coffee is quite sensitive to environmental factors and only grows in certain specific regions as a result. Those factors are being upended by climate change. Coffee is going to very rapidly become a luxury product.

Billionaires don't care. Twenty dollars or two dollars for a cup is effectively the same price to them; insignificant. It's the rest of us that get fucked.

  • What you have is rapidly encroaching fascism. What you need is any solution that gets you out of that.

You're not looking for ideal. You're looking for workable. You're going to have a lot more success pushing forward leftist candidates in a party that already has an established base of support than you are in trying to somehow build sufficient momentum for a viable third party in a country that has basically never had viable third parties.

  • So, unfortunately, this latest update seems to have created a lot of issues. First off, MobaXTerm support appears to be borked. Second, attempting to connect directly to LXC containers throws an error because I haven't linked a WSL2 instance for X11, even though X forwarding is not enabled for the connection.
