Ah, I suspected as much immediately after posting but didn't connect the dots in time!

They're not particularly old. There's a few games as recent as this year there. But then, can you really trust the quality of a list that includes 'Laura' (sic) Croft?

What platforms do you play, and how old is she? Because there's no point in us recommending particularly grisly PS exclusives like The Last of Us Part 2 if you're an Xbox player with a 6 year old.

So we can expect the average player to need around 3 weeks to complete Starfield, then.

I replayed through Hypnospace Outlaw. And hoo boy does that game hit harder when you're playing it whilst the major social networks are crumbling.

Because it's a game that's constantly telling the player that they should stop playing it. That everything is going to get worse if you do and it's all your fault. That you're going to cross the line again and again and again until every single person in the game is doomed. And then we play through the entire thing anyway, because it's so fucking good.

Still waiting for more Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment genre games, personally.

I keep meaning to go back to Outer Wilds. Last time I tried it I just couldn't figure out the piloting mechanics. Or, you know, what to do or where to go, but that's the whole point of the game I guess. But the not knowing where to go combined with the fact that every time I got into the ship I wasn't having any fun, combined with the fact that it's a time loop game so I have to do that again and again and again just resulted in an unrewarding slog.

The Case of the Golden Idol scratches a similar itch to Return of the Obra Dinn, just in case you missed that one. Bit simpler and more episodic though.

The gameplay loop uses getting to interact with the characters and to advance the various subplots as part of your reward/consolation at the end of each run. I'd call that story-heavy.

Vampire Survivors has more story than vampires. Which is a low bar to clear but it just about does.

I'm not enjoying just how often it wrenches control away from you to either show you a barely animated cutscene or a flyover.
