  • You are thinking about dignity and imagining a British aristocrat drinking tea from a fine porcelain cup with the pinky held up while plotting world domination. That's the vernacular meaning of dignity.

In the context of human rights, dignity is the natural right of every single person to be valued and respected for their own sake, and to be treated ethically.

You don't infringe it by saying that your government is being managed by incompetent or immoral people. You infringe it when you say women belong in the kitchen and not in the office, or that black people are naturally inferior to white people, or that gay people don't have right to love who they love, etc.

  • As a potential independent candidate Cuomo didn't poll that bad if you don't consider that:

    • the 39% he got are the same as Mamdani, so it would be 50/50 at best
    • as a known quantity, this 39% are probably his ceiling
    • it still didn't factor Schumer effectively endorsing Mamdani on social media

Political players are in still in flux, but, for the right wing of the Democratic Party, moving against Mamdani is getting riskier and riskier by the day. Not only would they lose the "unity" argument to mobilize the left close to the midterms, but the risk of suffering an humiliating defeat is too great.

  • The same way your right to wave your hands ends before they reach other people's faces, free speech can't include speech infringing on other people's dignity (in the legal/philosophical sense).

Regulating speech within this frame is as bad as stopping a bar fight by dragging the instigator away.

  • FPTP will always lead to dysfunctional parties.

There are at least 3 "natural" parties inside of the Democratic, and at least 2 in the Republicans. At local level primaries can mitigate the issue somewhat, but a national level it will always lead to conflict.

  • Congratulations, your noob user is now using JPEG-XL. It's not working on old devices, or any mainstream browser besides Safari. The less mature library also has a bug that allows for RCE and now everyone is running a cryptominer.

Now you say, but webp is supported everywhere, so let's go with that. Now the noob is using wepb for a bunch of rasterised vector graphics with 4 or 5 flat colors, and he's wasting more disk space than before.

So I repeat, if you need one size fits all, PNG is better, it works everywhere, and it's even more efficient in cases where lossless graphics matter the most.

  • The title is hyperbole. PNG is lagging behind modern lossless formats in terms of new features.
This doesn't mean it's a bad format or that it shouldn't be used. In fact, it should still be the default unless you need something it doesn't support or really need to reduce file size.

  • While he's not as extreme as Órban, Magyar is also against helping Ukraine defend itself, and he's being at least ambivalent about letting join the EU and NATO after the war.

We might have a Hungary problem, not a Fidesz problem.

  • Cuomo's speech seemed to go more into the direction of sitting this one out and wait for a safer way to attempt a comeback.

He's probably going to do some polling but unless there's some big advantage for him in a realistic scenario, trying to run and risking losing can damage his political career beyond repair. And yes, on an ideal world it would already be dead beyond saving, but we have the world we have.
