  • My husband, who grew up in the south, was taught about The War of Northern Aggression (that is what his teacher called the Civil War).

I am having our kids read The Autobiography of Malcolm X and A People's History of the United States.

ETA: My kids' Elementary and Middle schools taught the book Stamped.

ETA2: Are students in Florida going to know what the Underground Railroad even was?

  • What alternatives are there to Booking.com for travel in Europe and Asia? Is it better to use the site,.locate a hotel you want to use, and then try to contact the hotel directly through their own website (if they have one)? I've heard of Agoda (IIRC) for travel in Asia but Booking.com is the one I've heard recommended for Europe, especially for short term home rentals. ETA: Thanks for the tips!

  • Yes, that's my pick. To be exact, I want "low-level telekinesis" aka mutant luck power like the superhero Domino. Just walking around being a casual badass, barely registering the danger I'm avoiding.

I think Stan Lee said that being lucky is the best superpower.

  • He wasn't punished. He was "found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity" and placed in a state psychiatric hospital. That's not punishment, that is treatment and care. That's also why he is being released - they have determined that he is stable enough to be back in society. (I have my doubts that he will remain stable without being in a psychiatric hospital but I guess we'll all see.)

  • Ah, I love Preston Sturges. I guess I'm lucky to know a few film and TV nerds in real life. ETA: The Lady Eve is one of my favorite movies. (When I'm asked what my favorite movies are, I say that and I Know Where I'm Going by Powell and Pressburger.)

  • Asian beauty items, specifically kbeauty and jbeauty skincare. I love hearing about people's skincare routines and new niche items, ingredients and brands. But my friends irl aren't really into beauty (everyone i know is so pragmatic lol).

I really love beauty empties- I used to follow subreddits related to finishing beauty products, aka panning them (panning meaning hitting the metal pan at the base of powder cosmetics; panning has come to generally mean using up your products). There is something so satisfying about using up your stuff and I like vicariously experiencing it through other people. I mentioned that I was saving my empties for a few months to review which ones were worth repurchasing and my friends laughed at me, thinking I was joking.

  • I have fond memories of making or receiving mixed tapes. It was very labor intensive to produce and imperfect (start of the songs often cut off, no smooth transition between songs, last song might also be cut off on the end) but that was part of the charm.

  • In the actual study (linked to in the article) they mentioned testing this out with the coffee or tea powder substituting 1, 2 or 3% of the flour in the recipe. Also note that the used coffee grounds and tea leaves were repeatedly rinsed with distilled water, then dried and made into a powder. So, different than just used grounds or leaves that you would have handy.

Still, this might inspire me to find some existing recipes that call for coffee grounds and tea leaves.

  • So interesting to hear all of the individual reactions. I had the Pfizer primary series - the first shot was rough but the second shot, and the Moderna booster I had later, only caused some arm pain.

I just had my fourth shot, the Moderna Spikefax, along with the flu shot at the same time. Caused malaise overnight and pain in the COVID shot location for 3 days.

Whatever pain and inconvenience the vaccine shots cause it's nothing like having COVID. Ask me how I know.
