Unchecked capitalism allows for the snowballing consolidation of wealth and power, and is therefore inherently authoritarian/exploitative of others. It is possible to have markets that encourage and reward creativity, novelty, and competition without allowing any person or entity to become too powerful (mind you, wealth and power are always the same thing - or more specifically - two sides of a single coin).
This is also why you will see leftists attacking liberals - because liberalism is simply an extension of capitalism: the allowance and encouragement of inequitable consolidation of wealth and power. An egalitarian ends must actively oppose, prevent, and even correct such consolidation. Capitalism and liberalism are the enemies of freedom, liberty, and justice.
I'm waiting to see how this shakes out. I think all products should be self-serviceable and parts, tools, and documentation should be readily available.
What bothers me about the EU legislation is that it's worded in a way that implies someone like my mom (who can barely USE an iPhone, let alone service one) should be able to replace her own batteries. That will very likely result in product designs that are bulkier, heavier, more fragile, and less resistant to the environment (water, dust, etc)... e.g. snap-in batteries. That is not a future I want.
I have no problem opening a phone, tablet, or laptop and replacing the battery now... you just need the right tools and a little technical competency. The only thing I want is for companies to be prohibited from throwing up artificial barriers to self-service, like invalidating my warranty, disabling OS features or activating nags, or withholding parts, specs, or information.
Microsoft did go on the record saying that pulling Call of Duty from Steam was a mistake. Given that they also release their own exclusives on Steam, it's clear they understand that, even if Valve takes a 30% cut, not releasing on Steam is almost as bad as not releasing your game at all.
Exactly. Neo/liberalism is just right-wing feudalism with extra steps. If you allow (let alone encourage) the unmitigated consolidation of wealth (and therefore authority) you will ALWAYS move society rightward. Hence the term “Late-stage Capitalism”.
Economies require trade and incentive to thrive, but there must be limits to how much a person or entity can accrue.
I didn’t want to leave any of my content behind, because deleting your account still leaves all your content up. That took a while because I had to fix some bugs in an OSS tool so I wouldn’t need to delete tens of thousands of posts and comments by hand. The script took days to run with a 2s rate limit.
IMO, it’s pretty creepy that they try to keep your content when you request a GDPR deletion. That stuff could contain pii and they should be required to delete it, too.
I haven’t been back since. No Apollo is as good as no Reddit, as far as I’m concerned.
All right wing policies, ideals, and platforms are bad. The right is about consolidated vertical authority (monarchy, fascism, authoritarianism, etc) and the left is about distributed horizontal authority (democracy, socialism, egalitarianism, etc).
But in the US, where all politics is controlled by two ruling right wing parties, only one of those parties is SO FAR TO THE RIGHT that they pose an immediate existential threat to life, liberty, freedom, and societal stability.
I do not support the DNC, but I vehemently oppose the GOP. They are not the same. Don’t assume people support the DNC just because they are trying to prevent the GOP from establishing the Fourth Reich.
I only see you trying to hold accountable the "right-wingers"
Yes, because I am a leftist and there are no leftist political parties in the US. Anyone that thinks the DNC is remotely “leftist” has been swayed so far to the right that they can’t imagine there’s an entire world of politics on the other side of the DNCs milquetoast center-right authortiarian-lite platform.
I like how you assume that I’m a proponent of another right-wing political party solely because I pointed out that a different one is a violent, fascist, criminal, terrorist organization.
Yep. Congress gave the U.S. Secretary of Education the right to do it. But the terrorist party and their illegitimate puppets in SCOTUS decided that, no, a Constitutional law passed by Congress was not valid because... reasons. Can't let those "libs" ever enact something that is popular, fair, legal, and beneficial...
So yes, everyone should blame SCOTUS and the GOP because they are solely responsible for putting us all in this horrible position.
If your child is too afraid of telling you something important about themselves or their lives, that is a YOU problem. Public servants exist to protect children from risks to their health and safety, including risks at home. Nobody has a right to abuse their children. If you want to know about their lives and challenges, you need to make yourself a safe person for them to confide in. If you are not, that's on you and you alone.
How dare you imply that socialism and communism are egalitarian and anti-authoritarian, and aren't just pejoratives for anything right-wing fascists don't like!
I only watched the first two episodes, but watching this show was like experiencing a panic attack. Does it ever get less anxiety-triggering?
