  • I've heard of it, but have only ever heard of that being used on people who are carrying straight cash, because only drug dealers do that I guess... /s

Like you said, for white collar crime or corporate , I've never heard of it being used.

  • I agree with most of what you've said, but just throwing in my 2 cents that I've never heard Zionist as an antisemitic buzz word, I've only ever understood it to as a way to differentiate Jews who support the Israeli and it's settler colonialism project, and those who don't. Maybe antisemitic use it, but I don't think it's a common dog whistle (like globalist is, for example).

  • Tbh, while in this case I think it's egregious because I don't think using a VPN should actually be a crime, I'd love to see that punishment system used in the US.

Imagine if instead of paying fines for illegal stuff and then continuing to ignore the laws, Facebook, X, and other rich people and corporations had to pay back all the income made from doing their illegal activity.

  • I only have the same issue with Mastadon that I do with Lemmy, I have no idea what instance to join. This one I'm apart of now for Lemmy I randomly joined when the admin said he'd accept reddit refugees who wanted to try out Lemmy.

If anyone has any suggestions for good instances to pick I'd give Mastadon a try. Otherwise, it's a nightmare for people like me (who's been compared to Chidi from The Good Place in terms of my overthinking and decision making).

  • Either she was just unconscious or they are lying. But it seems pointless for the latter since they'd find out eventually, unless they plan on blaming her death on one of the bombs that are being dropped in Gaza. I guess we'll see if the family gets her back.

  • Right?! I wouldn't have believed the other person either if it weren't for sources from pretty reputable news organizations. And it's interesting that basically the same mistakes were made with these two different groups (Israel and Hamas, the US and Al-Queda). I bet it's probably been done more in South America or Africa or something.

EDIT: But for others reading, no, it doesn't make Hamas (or Al-Queda) the good guys. It just means there are multiple bad guys all around. But you can't make me feel bad about being distraught from Hamas killing civilians. There were babies and other innocents in there who never did anything wrong to Palestinians, and rape is a war crime that I can never just look over.

  • Hm. They actually seem to be kinda right. According to this article and this one, which source Israeli government officials from the time, they helped them since the 80's and basically helped make Hamas a thing. They did it to make the Muslim Brotherhood -based organization which ended up being Hamas and the more secular PLO fight each other, to basically drive a wedge in the Palestinians.

  • What if they took your home? Or your father's home, your grandfather's? All your families and neighbors? Then put you in MA open area concentration camp, controlled your food, water, electricity and movement, started destroying your sacred places, etc. Natives killed people for that, too.

  • Hmmmm

  • If you considered nothing that's happened since the beginning, maybe, but a lot has happened since then, including a massacre the other day where peaceful musical festival attendees and civilians in their homes were murdered, raped, and kidnapped.

While I agree that Israel is not the good guy here, it's a bit more nuanced than just that now. Hamas has done lots of atrocities and now it's more of an Everyone Sucks Here situation. Murder and rape of civilians are not okay (and yes, even the murders Israel has done, although I do find the rape and the targets escalates this latest atrocity into something more viscerally horrible).

Not to mention Hamas is also pretty far-right, also desires genocide, they just don't have the power to do it.

  • On the other hand, that is within a human lifetime and they're still expanding their settlements today. It's not like the bad stuff just happened to people 75 years ago then stopped.

But I wish Israel didn't help create Hamas. It would be much preferable for a more secular force to help Palestinians that I could put my support in. No one wants to support terrorists, but now Hamas is basically their only option, which sucks. I don't even like reading about the stuff over there now, it's all sad and there's no good solution.
