  • Except the whole bit where the government refused to make a deal regarding processing of asylum applications whilst they're still on the French side, inherently creating this issue of them drowning in the sea, heck there still might be some which attempt it, but it'd certainly be lower than the current situation.

By removing legitimate methods to apply for asylum, they've exacerbated this situation.

  • I kind of agree with other person who said it's basically just antidepressants... though I've shyed away from the one that made me deeply content (yet somewhat dysfunctional) in exchange for one that leaves me more functional in exchange for a bit more (healthy) strife.

I'd be quite curious of a world where everyone is on universally functioning antidepressants.

Is this society a functioning dystopia or a dysfunctional utopia?

Also OP have you ever played the video game 'We Happy Few', a key feature of the world is that everyone takes a mild psychedelic called Joy to stop them from remembering the past.

Another story that I seem to recall using a similar plot point is Brave New World and their drug Soma (IIRC)

  • Seeing that you mentioned MS365 imma just have my mini vent here, my mum is over 60 and her work has just started using MS365, so far run into a bunch of minor frustrations, but two big ones that she wasn't able to figure out herself, and damn near stumped me:

First was trying to create an email group, so it's easier for her to mass email her different classes, go to create the group, realise there's a bunch of other junk like chats and shared files as part of the group thing which isn't needed (and can't be used by non ms emails anyway, over half of them) but whatever, get most of the way through it then realise that two people aren't included in any group... ok that's odd, just says they can't be added to the group, turns out that they've likely had some permission set regarding not being able to be added to groups.

45 minutes in at this point and they cannot be added at all, decide to go back and manage to find the option to create a bog standard email group (list?) hidden away under a drop-down menu, this is what I wanted to and thought I was making in the first place, then realise I cannot import or move over the already existing groups to the simpler email lists, so have to start again...

Finally get all of that done and my mum starts to send her zoom links out except nothing is hyperlinking automatically, try to search links, hyper links, linking, etc via the help and nothing of relevance comes up, turns out outlook Web doesn't support that, only the desktop app does but nothing mentions that. Manage to track down some random forum post that states that automatic linking only works if the email is set to plaintext format, not html...

    Absolutely ridiculous

  • There's also something deeply unsettling about the smell of O3 in any concentration where you can truly smell it, not like getting punched in the lungs that ammonia bicarbonate is, and less irritating than than NOx compounds, but the almost sweet and sickly pleasant smell to it carries a sense of dread.

Speaking of which NOx is another good one; N2 is (essentially) inert and makes up most of our atmosphere, O2 has already been explained, but run a high frequency (white) electric arc in our atmosphere and you cause the N2 and O2 to combine in varying quantities producing NOx compounds.

NOx compounds are effectively gaseous nitric acid, it has a brown/red colour, and on constant with water it forms nitric acid. It doesn't matter whether that water is in a beaker with the NOx being bubbled through it, or the water that exists in your sinuses, lungs and eyes.

You lose your sense of smell pretty quickly when exposed to it and concentrations can build up quicker than you expected, if you've been overexposed to it, you'll wake up the next day or even a few hours later, feeling like you've got the worst sore throat in your life, like someone stamped on your throat then tried to scrape it clean... assuming you do wake up.

    1/10 do not recommend.

  • They're a classic English pick'n'mix sweet, with a texture that basically like somewhere in-between a candy cigarette that's been inflated/puffed up and what I imagine the circus peanuts candies (which we don't have in the UK) would be like, flavored with artificial banana flavour and I think the prawns are supposed to be strawberry (but I honestly don't know).

They're somewhere in-between gross and great, depending on if you like sweet things or not.

  • Banana milk is odd, both loved and hated it as a kid, and nowadays something about it makes me feel really ill (even when accounting for lactose intolerance), yet I love the banana from banana and prawn sweets.

In a similar vein hotdogs make me feel like death, like doubled over from stomach cramps

  • Believe me, I'm quite aware they're very different chemicals, just was pointing out one aspect for the reasoning regarding the reduction in anxiety might be too do with CO2. I would attribute the reduction of inhaling carbon monoxide has possibly helped reduce the amount of lightheadedness I used to get when smoking

  • Another +1 for magnesium glycidate before bed, and another suggestion for you to speak with your Dr about is propanol; it's a blood pressure medication used to treat anxiety, it's often used in combination with ADHD meds. I personally didn't like it, but it can be very effective for some people.

  • You're spot on about everything you've said, the only bit I'd like to say is that my reasoning for the reduced anxiety is the reduced CO2 inhalation, as increased CO2 levels will generally increase anxiety.

Also my goodness I am so much more outgoing now that I vape weed as opposed to smoke; when smoking it back in the day I wanted to be atleast 100meters from people (or better yet in some woods) due to concerns about the smell etc, nowadays I will confidently walk down the street vaping, or go to social events not too worried about it, ironically my friends who still smoke are so much more anxious about going out.

I've only ever had someone comment on the smell when we were both in the same room.

(Also unrelated but seriously fuck my countries culture of smoking weed with tobacco)

  • My working theory for the increased anxiety from smoking Vs vaping is to do with increased inhalation of the combustion products as well as both CO and CO2; increased CO2 inhalation is known to increase anxiety (or atleast the symptoms of it).

Plus with vaping my consumption of cannabis went from 1oz a month to 1oz every 6months.

Interestingly cutting out caffiene helped massively with my anxiety, but I noticed I was unable to effectively multi task, as such I've switched from coffee in the morning and through the day to a single strong cup of tea, and then 1-2 cups of coffee between 3-5pm, with very little negative effect (though my coffee is half decaf and half regular)

The main bit of caffeine coming towards the end of (but not after) my meds functional period appears to be much less anxiety inducing, but still allows me to function in the evening.

  • Look into vortioxetine, it's not quite an SSRI but a multimodal antidepressant with a similar safety profile as SSRIs, it basically functions like an SSRI but is rather clear headed as opposed to the slight fog that traditional SSRIs induce. Generally less anxious with it than I was with sertraline.

Other aspects are, vape your weed, don't smoke - it's sooo much cheaper and healthier.

Cut out tobacco, and try reducing caffiene, if applicable

  • It can get up to 4 weeks, though my experience is closer to 4 days to a couple of weeks, I think it depends heavily on what apps you're using, how much you're moving about and how much stuff you're installing

  • Personally this has been the most feature rich/open source one I could find, and it's what I ended up going for, there's an opensource app store, direct integration with gadgetbridge, a decent always on display much like the amazfit bip S, which also means a long battery life.

  • This is one that seriously gets me as to why we don't do this more, it would make so much sense. Obvious benefits are power generation, but also when you consider, it would significantly reduce how scorching hot large carparks get in the sun, depending on the style of the solar canopy being built it could also massively reduce the amount of water flow onto the ground reducing some wear on the tarmac in addition to some hazards.

Also for places like the UK where we typically don't have huge amounts/extended periods of snow, as long as the canopy is sufficiently designed for the additional weight, you could ameliorate the need to salt the car parks, once again increasing the life of the tarmac.

It would also keep people's cars much cooler, in the sun, and make things generally a lot cooler below the canopy.

  • If you left them with their batteries empty then the batteries are likely actually dead.

If you're going to leave a device untouched for an extended period, make sure the battery is atleast 50% or more full before doing so.

  • Unrelated beyond the Tories being retarded with banning things for no real reason: I've just discovered that they've effectively banned the sale of sodium hydroxide (drain cleaner) and potassium hydroxide (used to make soap), before I could buy them on eBay or get the sodium hydroxide at any super market, but now I have to go via a chemical supply company, taking literal weeks, and paying £7 for 100g of sodium hydroxide, where I used to be able to get 500g for £2.

They're scum for an endless list of things but this has really annoyed me.

  • Except it isn't a stretch to suggest that there ought to be a mechanism in which a post will be shadow deleted if it receives a high percentage of downvotes and multiple reports of keywords like CP/CSAM etc within a short space of time. This would then rely on an admin either reapproving (if it wasn't) or deleting the material permanently, but would make it safer for end users.

Heck, have it so that if someone triggers this mechanism, their account is shadow banned until the admin can take action so they can't spam post to other communities/instances.
