  • Why don’t we just use county lines for representation until maps are drawn. It’s predetermined and while counties do typically lean politically, they’re not developed around political lines. That way we don’t halt all progress until a map is redrawn. Delaying the redrawing is a strategy on its own so take away the benefits of delay

  • This is a minimum on the visa, not on skilled workers. The argument is that very skilled workers already make more than that. But I’ve worked in restaurants that rely on H1B waitstaff and they pay them $4-$5/hr. These are the places this would target. They’ll go straight back to hiring waitstaff at minimum wage vs hiring foreign at $25/hr. Ya minimum wage sucks, but it’s better than being jobless.

Whereas skilled labor, especially tech jobs, those people are already making six digits. They’ll already clear the bar for $25/hr. So nothing will change for them and it won’t upset major labor markets that don’t abuse the system.

  • Phone numbers can be spoofed and calls can be redirected. Or, even better, conditional call forwarding is supported by most carriers. It can be set up and you’ll never know. Then they get the phone call and not you

  • The H1B visa is abused by companies to pay garbage wages and not hire local employees. It needs a safety net. If they can’t find someone local and need to fill that position with overseas work, so be it. But put a higher minimum wage on it. $25/hr minimum on foreign workers would get Americans jobs very quickly. And for the companies not abusing the visas and needing highly skilled labor, well $25/hr isn’t much and they’re already probably making more.

  • They like it because it’s cheap and easy. They pay a phone provider for the 4 digit phone number and type in a script to generate a random code and text it. There is no oversight or maintenance.

Pairing with an Authenticator app is easy, but a little more work. Pairing with a mobile app can get a little tougher and require development plus maintenance in making sure the app cannot be spoofed and works with updates. Using a physical drive for 2FA is a pain in the ass to set up. From a business standpoint, 2FA only needs to work enough to remove liability from your business. If someone spoofs your cellphone number that’s on the phone provider not them so that’s enough to remove liability

  • This is complicated.

In one hand, law enforcement has to break the law at times to enforce it. A cop will need to speed to pull over another speeder. There needs to be barriers. There needs to be lines even law enforcement cannot cross. But sometimes law enforcement needs to break the law.

In this case, what if they’re impersonating a child to catch a predator? What if they’re undercover and need a fake account to pass as legit. There’s acceptable cases for fake profiles too.

Again, there needs to be boundaries and limits. But some is acceptable.

Also, who’s getting prosecuted for having a fake account? I think as long as your not scamming people your fine and not going to get in trouble with the feds.

  • Tbh I think Futurama is perfect for streaming. It’s a fantastic show that I could easily binge but I’m just not feeling the waiting each week for an episode. Some shows I will wait for the episode and will plan for time to watch the premiere. But Futurama, I keep forgetting about. I’m enjoying the episodes and think it’s a great season, but I’m forgetting about it shortly after. I would gladly binge 10 episodes once or twice a year though and be happy with that.

  • November 2019 everyone in my house got it. Well, we don’t know we got it but we’re pretty sure we got it.

Went to urgent care and was told it’s probably the flu. It checked every box for the flu. So they tested us and sent us home. Flu test came back negative for everyone.

We were utterly miserable for a week then got better. Then we started hearing about the “first covid cases in the US”. I think their timeline is off and it came over before they started testing for it.

  • “Capitalism sucks so let’s go do this other arguably more shitty thing that is even more susceptible to corruption”

Makes sense. Capitalism sucks and we need to get out of the capitalist structure, but your dream of fucking communism garbage and irrelevant to that. It shouldn’t happen and it won’t happen. What we need to replace our system with is something that is able to be protected against corruption. That’s not communism.

  • We’re talking seconds of difference, a minute at most. Who cares? Put your phone down during the game and watch the actual fucking game and it won’t matter. Don’t worry about who’s tweeting the last play. Just watch the damn game.

Hell, I record the games I want to watch and start them an hour late so I can fast forward through commercials and still end the game close to the normal time. So most of the game I don’t watch anyways.

That all being said, fuck YouTube and the Sunday ticket bullshit. Too damn expensive.

  • My last raise was less than $2k/year. Our CEO got a raise of $50k… inflation has turned my “raise” into a loss. They’re throwing Pennies at everyone hoping they think they’re getting millions. Don’t fall for it.

  • I haven’t seen anything specifically as a “trend” but I’ve had a growing amount of paranoia that our entire economy in the US is on the verge of collapse. We keep pushing bigger profits and infinite growth so shareholders who contribute absolutely nothing to society can make more money but that money comes from somewhere. We can’t just magically make more money (we could but there’s multiple reasons we don’t. It doesn’t work out). It comes from the working class. And that working class isn’t getting raises but prices keep rising. I feel like it’s a giant bubble and when it explodes things are going to get really bad. I think people will actually die because we are on an economically unsustainable path and no one cares because everyone wants money now and doesn’t want anything else.

I’m pretty terrified of whats to come.

  • Eventually yes, and depending on the scenario it deserves the criticism. But this was an attack on a warship that was in open waters. The chance to hit a civilian was very slim.

War will escalate. Total warfare is probably inevitable already. Russia attacked Ukraine. Any retaliation on a military target is acceptable until Russia forfeits everything Ukraine lost and pays reparations to rebuild what they destroyed.

Personally I think this will escalate to NATO eventually. I don’t want it to, but Russia is pushing its boundaries further and scaring a lot of people. At some point someone is going to have to declare war on Russia instead of waiting for Russia to do the same to them. People will die. It’s unfortunate. I wish it wouldn’t happen but I don’t think Russia will let it not happen. And the ball is in Russia’s court because the bar for not killing people is “don’t invade other countries” which is a pretty low bar to set.
