My dude can we not gatekeep homelessness‽ Lack of a home in societies with abundance is a systemic issue stemming from the diversion of tax funds away from supporting those who desperately need it. Just because the Starbucks people are human enough to give the guy a cup of coffee while he charges the best chance he has at getting the support doesn't mean he is the problem.

Dehumanization of any population is the issue. Your neighbor is not a subhuman to you, nor you to him (I hope) but suddenly the neighbor a few blocks down is a subhuman? What's the local "radius of exclusion" before we start othering more humans?

This was what I took away from his comment as well. His personal experience with physical abuse likely lead him to interpret "slapped upside the head" in a more visceral way than I think OP intended. Primary issues I can see with retrieval are tangling/kinking and re-spooling/splicing. The fibers are insanely thin and the drones are flying in between trees, not exactly a smooth path for retrieval.

My first memory of a "global event" was 9/11. Then the Patriot Act and the Iraq/Afghanistan war. Then Citizens United and single-payer ObamaCare got shutdown and I gave up on the US, put my head down and got to work on an engineering degree so I could emigrate.

Thankfully, despite failing out and putting a total of 10 years into my 4 year degree, I graduated 2 years ago and am in a reasonable position to make that move. Leaving family and friends behind fucking sucks, but I can always come back when things simmer down, or at least provide a place to go if things don't.
