  • I mean, I'm talking strictly about the scenario implied in the material of the post. Also, not everyone can arm themselves for various reasons. I happen to be in this camp. If the shit went down, the best thing I could do is bug out with the people I can who are also under the threat of violence.

  • I think the value in Mastodon rn is getting away from the algo. I think the lack of one does limit its marketability though. I never really liked Twitter but I know a lot of people who do who hate mastodon because of how complicated it feels and the lack of content.

  • It's why this rhetoric works for much of their base. They wouldn't be pushing this strategy if there wasn't a voting block that fully wants it. As a gay person, this is also part of why I'm out and married. If the authoritarian state wants to prosecute me for being who I am, let them do so and show the entire world what they really are and what I really am.

  • Another sensationalist title. The article makes it clear that the problem is users reconstructing large portions of a copyrighted work word for word. OpenAI is trying to implement a solution that prevents ChatGPT from regurgitating entire copyrighted works using "maliciously designed" prompts. OpenAI doesn't hide the fact that these tools were trained using copyrighted works and legally it probably isn't an issue.

  • I've had a bidet for a while now and here has been my experience:

    • I have a cold water bidet which used to annoy me a bit but I soon got to the point where I don't even notice or care. At any rate, there are warm water bidets but you will need to run a hot water line off of your sink likely.
    • You get water on your ass which to me feels cleaner than an ass which hasn't been washed at all. Using paper in public places now makes me wish bidets were more widely used because TP alone doesn't leave me feeling clean anymore. I suppose you would get water everywhere if you were squatting instead of sitting.
    • You can let it air dry but even if you don't, it takes a lot less TP than wiping without it. We go through less than half of the TP that we used to before getting the bidet.
    • TP is convenient but not cheap. You can get a quality home bidet for $20-$30 which will save you a good amount of money in the long run since you won't be going through nearly as much TP.

I used to think bidets were weird until I started using one on a regular basis. Now I can't live without it.

  • Think "lightweight convertible laptop" rather than "tablet with a keyboard". It's an Intel processor but it's on the efficient side. It will run those desktop apps but don't expect a lot of performance.

  • I honestly think the combining of the same communities on different instances will happen more at the app layer. It wouldn't be hard to group them all in the same category for convenience and it allows for more granular control. Downside being that it makes an already complex platform more complicated but hey, that's kind of the point and reason people come here to lemmy in the first place. I want more people to join lemmy but I also know that it's going to be a niche platform for quite a while if not the rest of it's existence.

  • I really don't want to get into it so I'm just going to give you a good ol Louis Rossmann video for your viewing pleasure. The point is that Apple has literally built in mechanisms in their ssds to prevent interpretability even as their old tech worked with it and yet tons of people buy their products with their blatant anti competitive practices and people like you will do apologetics for them. They could build RCS into their app at any point but they don't and blaming their competitors for why they can't put it in. They do it with apps on their smart speakers as well. They only want their services to work with their devices and there is no excuse for the most profitable tech company to act that way except that it affects their bottom line and if there was anything they could do to pad their pockets with this switch to USB c, you could bet your bottom dollar that they would do it.

  • There is plenty of reason to think they will do something different. Apple is notorious for being petty with their interpretability. They have yet to build the RCA standard into their messages app because doing so would mean playing ball with their competitors. They intentionally make their Mac parts in such a way that you can't get 3rd party replacements and instead need to rely on Apple for repair. They do shit like this all the time and I wouldn't put it past them to limit interpretability here because they've made the calculation that their customers will think that it's a problem with the competitor and switch to Apple more often than not.
