  • Yep, already an 'issue' (feature request) on github:

    https://github.com/aeharding/voyager/issues/367

You can just make text bold or italics yourself of course. And adding a hyperlink can be done manually as well. But I agree that buttons would be easier.

    And before you ask:

To make text bold add ** before and after the text)

To make text italics add * before and after the text)

To add a hyperlink put the text between [] and immediately add the hyperlink after it between ()

  • That's indeed what I use it for. If I would have added a hyperlink to the release notes of Voyager, I might refer you to the hyperlink 'in my OP' (original post).

But I'm simultaneously the OP (original poster) that people might refer to in the comments if they point out the OP added a hyperlink in the OP.

  • The best way to get a quick understanding I think is to listen to episode 561 (2015) of This American Life about NUMMI in California:

    https://www.thisamericanlife.org/561/nummi-2015

Toyota was more or less forced to start building cars in the US in the early eighties and did so in an unlikely joint venture with General Motors. GM was very interested in learning how Toyota build their cars. Bottom line: the Toyota Production System or TPS is mostly a way of management thinking that is completely different from the way most companies in the world manage people.

It is based on trusting employees, enforcing employees by training them, allowing employees to report errors as soon as possible, viewing the production proces as a manager with your own senses, understanding the production proces, truly following a vision and more.

Toyota actually does what most managers learn in management schools but don't practice. Most managers outside Toyota want to be a boss and not a leader. But Toyota wants leaders that are being followed by employees based on intrinsic values.

Interestingly, the Toyota Production System is heavily influenced by the Training Within Industry program developed by the US Army during WWII and taught in post-war Japan by the US. And statistician W. Edwards Demming who showed Japan what true PDCA looks like.

Although an initial success, the production plant ultimately stopped operating. It was purchased by Tesla, and AFAIK, as of today Teslas are being build in the same plant in Fremont. But I highly doubt TPS is used to build Teslas.

  • This is a good question, because it never gets a proper answer.

I think most people consider it a way to approve or disapprove an OP or comment, but it's completely unclear why.

Let's say you post an OP about basketballs in the community!basketballsarecool@someinstance. If your OP describes all the cool things about basketballs, you'll receive upvotes. If your OP describes basketballs are useless, you'll receive downvotes. And it probably will be the reverse in the community!basketballsareuseless@someinstance.

Lemmy could at least stand out if the development community would remove downvotes. It's an unnecessary polarizing passive aggressive way to disagree with somebody, that leads to all kinds if unnecessary negative emotions.

But it would be even better if the whole upvote / downvote system can be disabled. You don't know who is upvoting / downvoting and what does it say?

  • I've noticed this behavior outside Voyager as well.

After I logged into the Lemmy instance on which the OP was hosted (which happened to be the instance on which I was logged into Voyager), I noticed there was a language drop down menu from which I could choose a language that describes the language of my comment.

It's not populated with languages if I only select 'undetermined' in my account, the drop down meny only allowed 'undetermined'. When I selected all possible languages, the drop down menu showed all those options.

When I chose 'undetermined' I couldn't post a comment in the web-interface either. But after I chose the language of the OP, the comment could be submitted. After that, the comments on the same OP could be submitted from Voyager as well.

I think there's something strange going on with Lemmy and/or instance settings.

  • You're welcome.

Dutch parliament planned to go on leave the coming weeks as off today, but they returned to debate today about the collapse of the government.

The opposition has asked for Rutte to resign immediately considering his role in the collapse of the government, which was the direct result of Rutte asking a christian coalition party to refuse children of asylum seekers to be joined with their parent. It was clear upfront the christian coalition party would never accept that, after which the government collapsed.

If Rutte doesn't resign, a motion of distrust will probably be filed during the debate. If it's backed by a majority, it's exit Rutte. The question thus becomes if the christian coalition party that was confronted by Rutte will support the motion of distrust.
