  • Except for the fact that over the first 10 years of the loan, nearly 90% of that payment goes to interest. Amortization and front loaded interest is a bastard. With property tax and insurance, a $500k house will cost about $1.5MM over the life of the loan.

Not trying to dissuade anyone from home ownership, it’s just not as cut and dry as it may seem.

  • I was 11, and the movie was the sixth sense. The girl vomiting scared me, and also when the mom leaves the kitchen and returns a few seconds later and all the cupboard doors and drawers are open…

I was watching this with my family at home and during the movie my older brother used his cell phone to call our home phone which was located on the other side of the house in the kitchen. I hadn’t realized it was him calling the home phone and I jumped at the opportunity to leave the scary move to go answer the phone. All the lights were off as I entered the kitchen. I flipped the lights on and boom… all of the doors and drawers are wide open. My brother lured me into the kitchen with that phone call just to scare me.

It’s not that scary of a movie but to this day I refuse to watch it. Also, I stopped speaking with my brother years ago.

  • The Bible also condones slavery, rape, incest, misogyny, torture, and genocide, so who cares what it says.

Also, who cares what others think of you in this blip of an existence if eternal peace awaits everyone who accepts the deity regardless of how evil ones actions may be.

The Bible is a bunch of horseshit nonsense.

  • Christianity is a bunch of horseshit altogether. Here are some choice examples:

"Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and equitable but also to those who are perverse." (1 Peter 2:18)

“If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.” (Deuteronomy 25:11-1)

"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again." (Exodus 21: 7-8)

“I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.” (1 Timothy 2:12)

"O daughter Babylon, you devastator! Happy shall they be who pay you back what you have done to us! Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock!"(Psalm 137:8–9)

And on and on it goes

  • So yea, I hear you. I pretty much exclusively listen to NPR for news, and they are pretty balanced if not potentially a little left leaning from time to time, which I actually find refreshing.

But when a measurable percentage of the country thinks fox is fair and balanced, or that FB is a news source, the ability for our free press to safeguard democracy is severely threatened.

What good is free press when there are no longer facts and everything is opinion based?

Paraphrasing Asimov, ‘There is a cult of ignorance which operates under the false notion that democracy means that my ignorance is as good as your knowledge.’

When trump took a play straight out of the dictators handbook and started shouting fake news, I began to fear that this was the beginning of the end. The real beginning however was probably a few decades back when news went from dry and factual to sensationalist infotainment.

  • I have always felt that freedom of press was one of the most fundamental aspects of a working democracy. Without a free press, you cannot have proper checks and balances. Unfortunately, while press is still ‘free’, actual unbiased news gets only a small fraction of the viewership. Mainstream ‘news’ is nearly completely opinion driven, and profit is the incentive rather than the dissemination of information. The free press no longer serves its necessary function, there is no accountability, and democracy is at risk.

  • Agreed that it is a shame the world hasn’t changed for the better, but completely unrelated is the fact that there were a few months there where absolutely nobody knew just how bad it was going to get.

Only easily fooled unreasonable people were convinced one way or another when there was no scientific consensus on if the virus was going to kill 1 million or 1 billion, or somewhere in between.

It’s easy to look back and say ‘well it wasn’t world ending so it was irrational to have that fear’, but when millions are dying, you aren’t allowed to leave your house, and experts are saying that they don’t know how bad this is going to get, I would say that it was reasonable to be worried.

  • When Covid hit and lockdowns started, it was reasonable to think that the world as we know it might be ending. I was scared for sure and had started making contingency plans to flee to the mountains in a U-Haul full of canned foods and water.

Things are manageable now despite people still dying from Covid. Big corporate has been milking us since, as if their profits today are the last dollars they will ever make, and so it goes that they squeeze and squeeze and squeeze.

It takes a special kind of ignorance to ignore the impacts of Covid which were made worse by the inaction of trump, the fucking idiot, and say something as blitheringly stupid as ‘well I had more money when trump was president ahardy har har’
