  • Lmao. No, I don't agree that file format is the most critical choice, though in that regard a database still has many many benefits. Regardless trilium has interoperability, if you entirely need plaintext files then you do you. I don't really care, nor do I expect that to be anywhere close to a common requirement.

Yes obsidian supports various linking formats, but mainly uses its own. Unless you convert or willingly and intentionally use a more compatible system from the start, something plugins and obsidian itself only somewhat support, you'll probably be using the obsidian specific linking. Why wouldn't you either, it's a good link system.

Come on. At least have knowledge about the software you are trying to criticise.

Ive used obsidian for 4 years before switching to trilium. Feel free to not be an ass and actually say something useful or relevant to the discussion, otherwise cheers.

  • I didn't say everyone should necessarily use trilium. I described my rationale pretty plainly. Trilium can be transformed into md files trivially, if it gets abandoned, any users will be fine.

Trilium is literally available as an installer.

Use whatever you want. I'm not really here to describe the entire feature set of trilium for people in a play by play. Go look at the features, give it a try, or don't, im not about to place massive amounts of personally produced information in software I can't fully trust though.

  • Which is relative to personal taste and needs.

    Everything about this discussion is.

far better option than notion, onenote, etc for most people

    OK.

be fairly easy to get the important data migrated into anything else.

Why bother when I can do it now with the better option rather than in a couple years with several thousand notes?

Also it should be noted that peculiarities about how obsidian works makes transfers non trivial. Individual notes are fine, file structures not as much, but it's minor.

Trilium has a pretty robust export system last I checked. Not rally worried about that, meanwhile I get the massive speed upgrades and stability associated with a database.

Sure it could be reverse engineered... Or just use the software that's already basically there...

You're doing that thing where someone starts going to bat and listing off this that or this other thing to rationalize their own choice or rationalize the choice for others.

I've used obsidian for years. I switched to trilium for reasons I stated above. Unless obsidian goes fully foss, and gets way way more stable, i'll be using the genuinely better choice, thanks though.

  • The driver of enshittification is extracting money from your user base and investors alike. Lacking one doesn't stop it.

If I was going to trust obsidian, their code would be fully foss. Since it isn't, there is nothing future proofing my notes in their software. Might as well switch now to something which largely works better and is more feature rich.

  • They just used it as an example.

If you'll do the minimum you should keep a wound dry.

If you'll do more than the minimum you should keep the wound clean and lightly moist.

The issue with moistness is it also allows infections a better environment to fester. Which is why without antibiotics you're generally better keeping things moderately dry.

  • I mean it wouldn't be that surprising, they make all their money on corporate installs. A service based Linux type system which has all the same spyware and issues as windows being a good business decision for them doesn't seem like a victory, just a corporation doing a capitalism.

  • Or maybe different cultures just have different palettes and people want to eat food that tastes like what they grew up eating? Maybe we could just... Enjoy both approaches to food? Outside of this meme do you even know with confidence that there aren't Indians, a country of almost 1.5 billion people, 5x the size of the us, trying to recreate common meat dishes in a vegan way?

Friend, you just complained about the culture war, right before blatantly partaking in it in a wildly nonsensical way.

  • While true, it's a false equivalence. Getting news from multiple news sources is less controllable of you than getting your news from 'multiple sources' filtered through social media algorithms targeting you.

Further, you can often browse news in a private fashion. You can be fingerprinted, sure, but it's easier to mitigate with multiple news sources than fingerprinting in social media, especially when you get to accounts on both. And lets be realistic, someone getting their news from tik tok is being tracked hard in ways they would have no way of predicting from multiple data sources and with phone information that they don't realize they are providing.

Someone watching CNN or fox news or abcnews or what have you is not even close to being manipulated in the same way, even if they are being provided a biased data set.

Social media news is the worst of both worlds.

  • It's also, like other social media, easily and continuously manipulated to social engineer your worldview. Please try to avoid getting your news from social media, especially tik tok, but also Facebook, reddit, Instagram, Lemmy, Twitter or mastodon, etc.
