  • I loved the colony design. It kinda makes sense. There's an endless number of planets out there, so why not found a colony for your weird LARP phantasies? "Hey, you wanna join my colony reminiscent of Victorian England? There'd be bustle skirts, butlers and bat'leths."

I had a feeling right from the urgency of the first minutes that they were setting this episode up as SNW's version of "The Best of Both Worlds". And the elements are certainly there. A superior enemy. A plan to fool them with technobabble. A crewmember held hostage -- just this time it's split up between Captain Batel being infected, and La'an, M'Benga and Kirk (and colonists) captured. And a cliffhanger. I had hoped that they wouldn't do cliffhangers in this show -- especially season-ending cliffhangers when we don't even know when the next season will air. (2025 maybe?) Or if they did it then at least do it DS9 style where it's more like a teaser of things to come instead of an actual cliffhanger.

Oh well, at least they didn't kill off Batel immediately, and I hope they won't do it in season 3. I'd like to see more of her and of her relationship with Pike because I think it's a really interesting relationship dynamic for a Starfleet captain to have a truly equal partner.

I'm not quite keen on the physics in this episode. Would the Gorn really be fooled by the Cayuga's saucer suddenly "naturally" accelerating towards the planet from the orbit of its moon? That already bugged me in Star Trek Into Darkness when the ship suddenly "fell" towards Earth. Yes, this is a Science Fiction show but they could really use a science advisor for this basic stuff.

Finally, I wonder if every season will bring in another TOS cast member, and who will be next. Sulu? (he'd be an astroscientist though, unless they ignore the 2nd TOS pilot episode) Cadet Chekov? Bones? Janice Rand?

This all sounds a bit negative but I actually enjoyed the episode. It wasn't the best episode of the season but still above average. I just hope that season 3 will come rather sooner than later.

  • At least. With the strike(s) going on it could be even longer. Though I presume that the studios will try to pump out new content as quickly as possible once productions are possible again.

  • I like the timely updates and I very much like the UI. Not just the Material You color scheme (which I initially thought was a useless gimmick but have come to really like) but the look in general. Everything is just so pleasantly designed. I know that people around here hate too much padding but I think that's what makes the Pixel UI look so good. On other phones I always have the feeling that the padding isn't right; for example, on many phones (especially Samsung) the text in the status bar isn't center-aligned vertically and it drives me nuts. Or the text is squeezed into the corners.

On top of that there are useful features like Call Screening or Live Transcribe. And the voice typing is phenomenal.

  • It's not cheaper at all sync ultra is €3 a month and add free is a €20 one time payment

I mean, you cannot really compare monthly payments with one-time payments. Since ad-free is only available as one-time payment it only makes sense to compare the one-time payment prices for each of them. The one-time payment for ultra is ~180€. The one-time payment for ad-free is ~20€. Is that not cheaper?

  • I would somewhat agree with you if we were just talking about ranking Star Trek episodes specifically. If Subspace Rhapsody is among the worst Star Trek episodes you've ever seen, then sure, give it a 1. That makes sense on Star Trek specific review websites like jammersreviews.com.

But we're talking about IMDb which ranks all TV shows and all movies, so the ranking scale encompasses everything you've ever seen on screen. And now tell me again with a straight face that a well-produced well-written well-acted episode of a franchise that we love ranks in the same 1-star category as the worst non-scripted reality trash TV you've ever seen.

  • My head canon: Pike knows his days are limited. He's raising a successor as first officer if Una takes command, or potentially a new captain. This way he can get to know the ship and the crew, and they can get to know him.

  • I don't have the funds to pay for ultra

There's also a cheaper ad-free version without the ultra features. Tap the profile picture in the top left, then "remove ads".

  • SNW does a good job of capturing the [...] tone specific to TOS

I think that's a point that a lot of people miss. SNW is much closer in tone to TOS than it is to the Berman era of Star Trek. 90s Trek was much more stiff and serious compared to TOS. And SNW brings back that lightheartedness and playfulness of the original Star Trek. Not just in its comedy episodes but in general.

  • It works for me. Maybe it's an international licensing problem? (I'm in Germany)

  • Which looks like a weird hybrid between iOS style and Android Lollipop style.

I'd rather stay with Sync for that sweet MaterialYou style.

  • There seems to be quite a tug of war going on in the IMDb ratings. 20% of users voted the episode a 1 out of 10 stars. I mean, sure you might not like musicals. But all the talent that went into creating this show surely doesn't warrant a 1. 🤷‍♂️

  • Spock: "I solved for the Y in my computation ... but the variable so devastating: I'm the ex / X".

Thanks. Now I get it. IIRC the subtitles had "solved for the why" and then the X didn't make any sense. That is indeed clever.

My favourite Spock bit came at the end during the grande finale. Everyone was singing "we know our purpose, to protect the mission – our prime directive", and Spock just goes "not exactly". 😄

  • They can both be seen in the corridors. The first one (in a red uniform) walks by Ortegas when the ship is hit by the energy field at the beginning. The other one (in a blue uniform) walks by Number One and Kirk during their song.

There may be more but those are the two that I spotted.

  • I like it a lot. It makes the device feel really cohesive between apps. And changing the color every now and then feels like a breath of fresh air. Also, the pastel colors help to get rid of blue/grey tones which is easier for the eyes.

  • Thanks man! I really loved the Sync user experience on reddit and I'm glad it's now here too. In fact, when logged in on feddit.de (which currently isn't prone to outages like lemmy.world) it runs so fast that I sometimes think the content has been loaded from the cache – but it isn't. Really great.

My only wish would be for Sync to respect the setting that I selected on the website to not show any post/comment scores. Not constantly checking scores really helps with digital detox and also leads to me reading posts that I'm actually interested in (by the headline) instead of looking at stuff just because it has a lot of upvotes.

  • Addendum: after watching it again I realized that (for the first time?) several male background extras were wearing the dress-type uniform variant that only the women used to wear.

Are we getting the unisex skant back? Hell yeah! I love this show.

  • Yeah, I heard that too during the moment where Pelia suggests sending music through the rift. I think it's part of that song where Dawn dances at the Bronze.

  • Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes!

They've got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses!

And what's with all the carrots?

What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?

    Bunnies!

    Bunnies!

    It must be bunnies!
