  • I'll always remember a story my buddy told me in high school. His dad was a judge, and absolutely brilliant, and a major alcoholic. One time his dad sat him down and said 'I think you'll have a good life. Because you're smart enough to do well in this world, but not smart enough to realize what a shithole it is.'

I really think that there is a point where if you're smart enough, you have brain power to really pay attention to everything that goes on in the world. And paying attention to all of that can do serious harm to one's psyche.

  • Me, unfortunately. Never picked up the taste for coffee, but I accidentally got hooked on caffeine through energy drinks, which are way worse for you. Now I'm trying to acquire the taste for coffee at a late stage to wean myself off energy drinks.

  • Streetlight Manifesto. Toe to Toe is probably their weakest song. Kinda slow, lyrics aren't great.

Christina She Don't Know I Exist is pretty bad, but I'll give them a bit of a pass because they wrote it when they were about 17 years old.

  • I think they're referring to Hill Assist. In manual cars if you let your foot off the brake you start to roll down hill. This is dangerous if you're parked or stopped facing uphill with another car close behind you.

For generations, this was a problem that people had to deal with, and it took some skill. About 15ish years ago manufacturers started putting a feature on that would automatically hold the brakes until your foot hit the gas.

  • It's a movie that I saw, enjoyed, and mostly wrote off when it came out. But here we are 20+ years later and I'm still rewatching it every few years. It is still just over-the-top over-acted ridiculous silly fun.

Very well-paced and quotable. Main characters (Knightley and Bloom) were unremarkable, but the side characters (Depp and especially Rush) put in excellent performances into very silly roles.

It's not The Godfather, but it's not trying to be. It is pretty perfect at everything it did try to be.

  • Plenty of people over 70 still have cognitive function. Plenty of people over 70 benefit from decades of experience and relationship-building. Plenty of people over 70 make decisions for the benefit of later generations, either via a sense of altruism or to help their grandkids. Just because someone's old doesn't mean they're shitty.

I'm all for running out the shitty old people, just like I'm for running out the shitty young people. But let's not discount people for their age, either direction.
