  • Legitimately 1000x better than cave paintings or statues of uber-thicc cavewomen with massive knockers. Takes the whole imagination out of it, but no one really seems to care that rubbing one out is less challenging this way lol

  • Fine, but could you at least change the title next time instead of copy-pasting the entire post?

  • Like a gigantic three-toed Chocobo bird, I guess.

  • Have you set foot in one in the last two decades? They did enshittify it already, not only could you not find anyone to answer any of your questions about the merchandise, you could barely find someone to staff the register without crossing the entire floor because HR was running the staff levels at 50% capacity or less of what was seen in the 90's.

  • Funny you should mention that.

  • That clears things up lol Here's to hoping the meme trend doesn't die, this is a good one.

  • "If you don't pay me the big bucks for my experience and expertise, who else will tell the robot how to destroy your life?"

  • Anyone taking bets on how long it will take for it to get enshittified faster than Tim Hortons?

  • I'm getting the gist of the meme, but the MMA reference... I don't get it.

  • OP's criteria is for an equal (equivalent) alien civilization.

If they were to have what we have, they would be able to detect (infer) atmospheric composition filled with the byproducts of industrialization. It's not ideal, but IMO we're halfway there. I can't recall the system's designation, but there was some hubbub about one where the Sun's light was interrupted by some huge mass which seemed to not follow an irregular (hypothetically artificial and intelligently controlled) orbit. I can't wait for the tech to improve, this is exciting stuff.

  • "A Louisiana law cedes much of the power of the parole board to an algorithm..."

The people responsible for this imbecile sloughing off of responsibility need to be held to account. The stakes are too high to permit them to claim that "the brain warden got it wrong, but it's out of our hands", these are the types of situations that warrant standing directly in front of someone and forcing them justify the damage they've caused, and explain how they're going to rectify their fuck up and compensate the affected parties. What I'm hearing is alarmingly similar to news about current problems with medical insurance and the labour market.

  • What do you mean if? We've been doing that for years, and so far as I understand it, the only reason that we haven't found any is that there are millions of solar systems to check.

  • Good Lord, you know that you're a powerhouse of human vigour when even Montenegro takes notice and goes to the effort of granting you a war medal despite your enlistment in a foreign nation's army.

  • I've heard it explained as practical intelligence vs. abstract intelligence. Understanding calculus won't help you frame a house, produce slate tiles for its roof, cast the iron for a potbelly stove that keeps it warm, etc., but it will help to calculate the trajectory of a space probe that your country is using to investigate an asteroid, or tap the stock market, do your own taxes without error, strategize saving/investment for your retirement, calculate the dimensions for a culvert that keeps a property from flooding, etc.

  • Solid take, I hear more people saying this whenever it's discussed. Although it's a pretty decent measure for natural intellectual capacity, a lot of that potential isn't wholly practical even in modern society. Good for studies, math, science and Mensa, not so useful for nearly everything else.

  • You can get a prescription for ketamine? Jesus Christ, and this whole time I've just been using coffee, alcohol, tobacco, hash, and whatever psychedelic I can get my mitts on...
