  • Desktops and PCs are just OS name and version. Proxmox cluster is Ankh-Morpork (from Disc world) and nodes are Ankh Morpork street names: Treacle Mine, Pseudopolis Yard, Attic Bee, etc.

  • Yup. "It's too much work to do preventative stuff" followed by "No one could have predicted this".

A tale as old as time.

  • Great, now I'm picturing Mitch McConnell poppin' that turtle ass on the red carpet at the next CPAC.

  • Used Thinkpad with upgraded screen and retrofitted classic keyboard = perfection.

  • I'm going to add a clause to my will that a "reverse quinceañera" party must be held 15 years after my death to celebrate my passage from meat person to skeleton person.

  • My mom took to it pretty easily, but then again, someone changed her Amazon password and it took ages for her to convince Amazon to unlock her account, so she was pretty motivated to take steps to prevent something like that from happening again.

  • A few additional facts that people may not be aware of:

    1. Norway is not an EU country.
    2. The population of Norway is 5.4 million. The fines appear to be calibrated to cancel out Meta’s profits from the illegal behavior Meta is using to generate those profits in Norway.
    3. If it is not profitable for Meta to engage in those illegal behaviors in Norway, they will either stop breaking Norwegian law, or pull out of Norway entirely. Either way, it’s a win for Norway.

Per the article, the fines appear to be targeted to cancel out Meta’s profits from the behavior Meta is using to generate those profits in Norway.

If it is not profitable for Meta to engage in those illegal behaviors in Norway, they will either stop breaking Norwegian law, or pull out of Norway entirely. Either way, it’s a win for Norway.

  • Those bros: Who the fuck is Frank Castle?

  • Migadu is good. Have also been happy with Runbox.

  • As far as I'm aware, everything in Proxmox is open source.

I think some people get annoyed by the Red Hat style paid support model, though. There is a separate repo for paying customers, but the non-subscription repo is just fine, and the official forums are a great place to get support, including from Proxmox employees.

  • I haven't done it myself, but I have looked into the process in the past. I believe you do it just like paying any drive through to any Proxmox VM.

It's fairly simple - you can either pass the entire drive itself through to the VM, or if you have a controller card the drive is attached to, you can pass that entire PCIe device through to the VM and the drive will just "come with it".

  • I would say it's at the "bottom" of the stack - Debian is the base layer, then Proxmox, then your VMs.

Clustering just lets the different nodes share resources (more options with ZFS) and allows management of all nodes in the cluster from the same GUI.

  • Another vote for Proxmox.

Backups: Proxmox Backup Server (yes, it can run in a Proxmox VM) is pretty great. You can use something like Duplicati to backup the PBS datastore to B2.

Performance: You can use ZFS in Proxmox, or not. ZFS gets you things like snapshots and raidz, but you will want to make sure you have a good amount of RAM available and that you leave about 20% of available drive space free. This is a good resource on ZFS in Proxmox.

Performance-wise, I have clusters with drives running ZFS and EXT4, and I haven't really noticed much of a difference. But I'm also running low-powered SFF servers, so I'm not doing anything that requires a lot of heavy duty work.

  • It's also worth noting that many of the "indie" production companies are backed by billionaire money. For example, Annapurna (movies: Her, Zero Dark Thirty, American Hustle, games: Journey, Stray, Kentucky Route Zero, Outer Wilds) was founded by Megan Ellison, the daughter of Larry Ellison of Oracle software, worth about $150 billion.

Indian Paintbrush, the production company that has financed all of Wes Anderson's movies since 2007, is run by Steven Rales, CEO of Danaher, worth $7.3 billion.

It's not just production or indie firms either - CAA (Creative Artists Agency) talent agency that represents people like Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, The Weeknd, Bob Dylan, Aubrey Plaza, Bradley Cooper, Cardi B, Chris (Evans, Hemsworth and Pine), Salma Hayek and thousands of writers, producers and directors, is currently in final talks to be purchased by Francois-Henri Pinaul, who owns Gucci, Balenciaga, Girard-Perregaux and Christie's auction house, is married to Salma Hayek, and is worth about $33 billion.

  • I wonder what the Chinese version of Cocaine Bear is like

  • According to his lawyers, Alex Jones is a crisis actor

  • But what are we going to DO about the 5–12 feet tall, blood-drinking, shape-shifting reptilian humanoids from the Alpha Draconis?

  • Yes, but you'll need to do all the extra stuff required to get a domain name working.
