  • Before browsers even existed, there already was the internet. We had social media (NNTP and IRQ), online multi-user games (MUD, et al.), browsing (Gopher) and file hosting (FTP).

I was introduced to the web and the Arena browser with the words "It's just like Gopher, but with hypertext."

  • This is not just about the amount of data. I'm well aware that the measured amounts were totally off. Nonetheless, it is about being allowed to send any kind of data to the outside at all. And while it is probably quite convenient that you can get a message when a device has done a job, it is sufficient that you as the owner gets it, not anyone outside.

  • Luckily, most embedded devices lack the smart to attach to two networks at the same time. So you keep it locked into a network where it can only do your bidding, and it won't listen to anyone else. Unless they built in some very crazy and nefarious code and drive around with network enabled cars in the owners neighborhood.

  • I'm not talking about limits in low-level hardware support. I'm talking e.g. about games with anti-cheating software or productivity software with invasive license managers that are made not to run under anything but Windows.

  • People who are dumb enough to try taking a loaded gun onto an airplane are lacking the mental capacity to own a gun without endangering other people. In civilized countries, this usually will lead to a revocation of your firearms licence.
