The only point I mildly disagree with is that all jokes should be on the same level, as some things are just.... Not jokes. They simply masquerade as jokes because the person telling you their views doesn't want the potential backlash if you disagree with them.
Chapelle's stuff strikes me as more of that.
He's just telling us how he feels and tries to layer it with "jokes" so he can act like he's somehow in the right and we're the ones who just "can't take a joke".
That's pretty case dependent though, and someone who knows Chapelle better than I, or even someone with a different upbringing clearly can think differently.
There's just so much that you could actually have a comedy routine about that's not divisive.
Oh, there's plenty of inconsistency, and I'm definitely biased, no doubt about it.
(rant ahead, feel free to skip)
Of course, I agree with KG, and it's not really a "joke" for me.
So any answer I give you will be pretty heavily skewed.
That said, I do kind of think the DC thing was a bit overblown, but I also think he turned into a piece of shit who thinks he's allowed to punch down on others, but you aren't allowed to punch down on any group he's part of. "can dish it, can't take it" crowd.
But especially given how successful his career has been (and I fully recognize his struggle in getting started), and continued to be, his complaints fall on deaf ears.
But yeah, I don't claim to be consistent with how I judge people's "in the moment" things, and since the people I oppose have no concept of "consistency" (as well as them actively trying to make people like me and those I love cease to exist) I don't really see a problem with that.
There's no point in fighting fair when you're facing oblivion.
And krashmo this isn't directed at you, if anyone wants to try and tell me that "that's not what they want", I grew up in a pretty republican heavy area, that also attracted a lot of progressive young families, so I've seen more violence directed at other than I care to recount. It's not a "maybe eventually" scenario in my head. It's "now".
I am very much in contact with the younger, far more left leaning crowd, so my experience is definitely skewed against basically anything modern Israel has done.
I do know a couple loud mouthed older generational Jewish folk who would like nothing more than for Israel to be the dominant power on the planet, and will have no issue telling you that you deserve torture and torment for literally infinite time (hell) for even vocally supporting Palestinians.
Literally my first thought was "who the fuck cares"
Whether you find a joke funny or not, or in poor taste, or whatever... "WAAAAAH I GONNA KICK YOU OUT OF THE COUNTRY BECAUSE WORDS HURT" is not the appropriate level of response.
And besides, I thought these fucks were all about being tough, growing a thicker skin, getting over it etc
Suddenly it's not the same when it's one of theirs in the crosshairs this time? Or I guess iron sights, if I read correctly.
I'm genuinely curious, do you happen to recall what museums you may have seen similar designs at? I'm interested to see when their estimated age was and from what regions, because I can totally see people making armor like that, it's just not as effective as actual combat armor as what's on the left.
I've seen some pretty wildly impractical armors, and weapons over the years.
All of the metal ages all had wonky weapon designs at the starts, as we were still figuring out how to work things, how to kill each other, and how to use the new shiny stuff to our advantage.
And don't get me started on ceremonial outfits/weapons... Those are just..... No. Just no.
I regret to inform you that a great many people find it "cool", including a lot of the people I know who are huge fans of the Peter Jackson films.
Im not sure I'd say anywhere near half the people who have seen it would say it's "cool" but unfortunately the average person doesn't really know much about what makes good armor. I don't fault them for it, but I do fault the show for it.
Boromir is infinitely cooler even without the armor.
Regardless, you know someone looked at that thing, and said to themselves "yeah, this is good. This is correct." which is just.... Unfortunate.
I love seeing prison photos from other countries that show how well prisoners can be treated while still being in prison. Countries with extremely low recidivism.
And there are plenty of people I know who would see that and balk, because "that's being too soft"
I've had people insist that stronger punishment over rehabilitation is what you need, and ignore my bringing up that there's decades and decades of data that shows otherwise.
At best, the harsh punishments serve as a deterrent to other people doing similar things that might result in similar punishment, but that just creates new and sneaker crimes and criminals. It's better to rehabilitate, help people turn their poor choices around, and eliminate the cause of the problems that led to the crime in the first place.
But that's "too much work" so might as well not even try, right? As we all know, the light bulb famously was invented on the first couple tries.
When someone tells me I'm being ridiculous for having fun doing [insert thing]
Most recently it was because I was having fun messing with my RC stuff.
Like bitch just because your rc dreams died with that 1:32 scale bulldozer your older brother smashed in a jealous tantrum, doesn't mean I can't have fun designing my own 2ft long RC tank. Yes, I DO have fun driving a little box in circles making dirt fly around.
8 times out of 10 if the person complaining actually tries the thing with you, they also have fun.
Well said.
