I've found that my best responses both take them at face value, AND make them not want to troll anymore
Even if something is clearly bait, it still might be worth pushing back against. All internet arguments, bait or not, are principly about the audience, not the person you're responding to. I honestly don't care what someone's motivation is. If someone says bad shit uncontested, people start believing it.
This even applies to someone saying something to troll. If they tell a lie often enough, they tend to internalize it. If you actually want to influence a troll, make them not want to troll there. Give pushback that isn't fun for them to respond to.
Like all other social media, they harvest an invasive amount of data. Not more than meta apps or anything, but it is part of standard capitalist practice. They exist, like every mainstream social media platform in China or America, to promote economic interests in a corporate system. It deranked BLM videos because deranking popular dissent is part and parcel with selling to advertisers. China doesn't even need a backdoor, just the basic understanding of how it's similar to all their own apps.
China is another capitalist empire under a different flag. They're neoliberal to the bone, only better at exploiting the system than America in certain ways. They don't want to undermine the global capitalist order, as they're quite good at winning in it. They've become more nationalistic and hawkish militarily, but that's a direct result of neoliberalism. It quickly becomes unpopular if there aren't internal and external scapegoats. The degenerate western influences are scapegoated there, while the degenerate commie immigrants are the enemy here.
All of it serves to protect power. Trump will adopt many strategies from them, because that is what their government exists to do.
For context, this is a Chinese social media platform called "RedNote," aka Xiaohongshu which literally means "Little Red Book." Apparently TikTok users have begun to migrate there in protest of the TikTok ban. I'd imagine there are Chinese government astroterfing efforts to boost the campaign (assuming it didn't start in China).
However, the ban was such a foolish move by Democrats in the first place, that I'd be happy if Xiaoshongshu gains traction. The TikTok ban was one of many out of touch moves by the Democrats that got us a fascist dictatorship. The government will probably use the same law to ban this app too, and for all his support of TikTok now, I doubt Trump will stop that from happening. If populist leftists are smart, they will distance themselves from the ban and the nationalist libs who pushed for it.
As much as TikTok did allow invasive spying and manipulation by China, the billionaires of this country do worse. No need to defend TikTok or China; we just need to refocus the issue as a distraction from the class conflict that centralized social media inherently suppresses. Centralized platforms in China work exactly the same way, so it's not like Americans being allowed to interact with Chinese citizens is all bad. Maybe Americans will introduce marginal dissent while the government allows us in temporarily (unlikely, but their government isn't all powerful or anything)

If they refuse to accept a world with us in it, then there is no world for anybody. If they want to force us out, society will reflect their naked brutality and chaos. They will never win because we will never stop existing, no matter how much they try to exterminate us. We exist in the fabric of every culture, every nation, and every family. All they can accomplish is temporary evil, because they can never win. It's in the nature of conservatism to lose.
Who wrote this headline, an AI? It being hotter than models predicted does not mean we didn't expect it to be hotter. A better title could've been: "2024 was mysteriously hotter than climate science predicted" or "global heating smashes scientists' expectations"

As a SoCal city dweller, large scale fires were mostly a non issue as long as you live in urban areas. The response is always quick enough to prevent entire neighborhoods from getting rolled over, as the system is designed to handle surges by sharing resources. However, much like with hospitals dealing with outbreaks, there is usually an upper limit to how much they can do.
There has never been anything like this in modern history because this fire was a consequence of climate change. Excessive dryness and powerful winds created the wildfire equivalent of a flash flood, leaving firefighters little time to react. They were already fighting a war on the coast, but the storm created a blitzkrieg that descended onto densely populated areas before they could properly redeploy.
This is just speculation, but I suspect that death toll isn't in the hundreds or thousands because they prioritized evacuation over saving property. The areas hit were more urban than I ever thought possible, and it really could've been far worse given how quickly everything happened. The budget cuts didn't help, but this event was so extreme that I doubt a bigger budget could've saved many homes. In this case, the wrath of nature against ALL of humanity is most responsible,
