  • I've got Docker forwarding the ports to my host system, though. And I'm trying to connect Jerboa from a separate device that wouldn't know Docker is even involved. That connection works fine from a browser, so it doesn't seem to me like the hostname could possibly be the problem.

  • Yeah, I was a bit worried about that. Currently it doesn't have TLS enabled. I might have to have a valid certificate and everything, which would be annoying. If I don't get a silver bullet other than this, I'll probably see about going that route.

Edit: Yeah, looks like this is probably the case. It seems Jerboa only wants to connect to port 443, no matter what I put in the instance box and openssl s_server on 443 with just any old random certificate gives SSL alert number 46 which basically means Jerboa won't trust the certificate. So, I think my path forward is to make my server do the whole TLS thing with a valid certificate. Thanks everyone for the input!

  • Imagine this conversation in the IT department at a large bank:

    IT Manager: It's what?!

Security Engineer: Gone. It's all gone. Every red cent this bank held in every account has been transferred by malicious actors to anonymous Swiss accounts.

IT Manager: How could we have let this happen?

Security Engineer: The hackers got approval to install PuTTY. There was nothing we could do.

  • I can think of specific instances where I've done each of these roles in my software engineering job:

    • Tech support
    • Sysadmin
    • DevOps
    • QA (oh do I have a story about this one)
    • Management
    • Release management
    • Agile coach
    • Security engineer/pen tester
    • Compliance
    • Custodian

As well as customer relations. I don't know that I've ever done much product management, though.

  • They were marketing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (though not by name, because it didn't have a name yet) before the WiiU was released. And they strung everybody along until after the Switch was released.

Fuckers! I was an early adopter of the WiiU because "well, I'll for sure want one when the WiiU exclusive Zelda title comes out."

  • Legally, at least in the U.S. (though I hear not in Japan?), if you're sued on a defamation case (slander or libel), if you can prove that what you said was true, that's an ironclad defense.

I think it's fair to say that you can't necessarily know if something you've said about something was ethically acceptable until it's certain whether what you said was true or not. If you say something about someone that you aren't 100% sure is true, then whether it's ok for you to have said that can't really be known until the truth or falsehood of the assertion is certain.

  • doesn't stop the worry.

As someone who makes a lot more money than I did previously, I'd say it largely does, at least for me.

I don't spend anywhere near as much time:

    • Budgeting
    • Looking at my bank account balance
    • Deciding what needful thing I'll neglect this month

In short, I spend less time thinking about money, which means I spend less time worrying about money.

It's not like I don't worry at all about money, but I do worry a lot less of the time, and less intensely.

At this point, honestly, I think having more income might make me more stressed than I am now. Though I would like to be able to quit my day job for a business I own myself, maybe. As long as the income was reliable.

  • Do we really think there's a significant number of Trump voters out there who regret their vote? Really?

It seems far more likely to me that most Trump voters are doubling down. "Prices are going to come down way lower than they were before Trump took office. This is actually Biden's fault. Prices are going down, actually. Particularly eggs, depsite what the woke MSM would tell you. In fact, eggs are cheapest in states with the least restrictive gun regulations and highest deportation rates for illegals. Prices have never been this low. Trump is making Mexico pay our grocery bills."

Sure, you can find one or two people who will claim to be regretful Trump voters. (Just like you can find a very few microbiologists who swear the universe was created in six literal days around 6,000 years ago.) But I can't imagine any significant number of Trump voters having that much self awareness and intellectual honesty.
