  • Lemmy.ml just preemptively did it. I think lemmy.world also did it earlier but you'll have to double check that.

  • We want new users, but not any random users at any costs.

I'd rather see the community growing slowly but organically than adding a bunch of random people with a toxic Instagram logic.

We don't have to be 10s of millions to enjoy it here either.

  • Yes, thank you, I was anxiously looking forward to this.

  • Same line, we each follow in a different direction, yes.

  • Sure, but my content will eventually end up on some instances me and thread users are federated to at the same time, no ?

  • That would be very helpful for beginners and newcomers

  • I'm so glad to see people other than me annoyed by this.

  • Unfortunately, I erased all my content on Reddit, but I asked this same question a year back on /r/selfhosted. It was hugely upvoted, revealing that I wasn't alone wondering why.

Tldr: the community is toxic to newcomers and people learning. There is a veteran circlejerk only feeding on very advanced discussions and novelties. There is very little room for curious, anthousiasts and people stuck in the anomalous state of knowledge. I wrote a post precisely about this a few days ago.

Anyway, I find this community, and Lemmy in general, a lot more friendly and rewarding to be a part of. I really hope it will stay this way.

  • That's the attitude, thanks for sharing your new knowledge. Just running the docker run command should pull the image no matter what. So runing docker pull shouldn't be mandatory.

  • I ran power delete suite on my 9 yo account. It was efficient, untill I realized reddit restored my top posts / comments. So I ran pds again and for now my account is clean. I made a request to erase ALL my data and account under gdpr law and I'll let them delete my account for me. If they don't comply within 30 days, I'll fill a complaint to the CNIL and / or any relevant authority. This shit is not to be taken lightly, authorities won't take it lightly eother if we all do the same.

Edit: just checked back and they restored some of my posts. Third time so far. I won't be deleting my account before I'm sure all of my content is out of their platform.

  • Considering you have to patch yourself the app with their tool and the tool doesn't need root access, I've never had this problem.

  • I used the same power delete suite as stated in another comment. Worked great. You can also try shreddit.
