  • This time last year I stayed on Bardsey Island, off the Welsh Coast. There's hardly any phone signal on the island, but they warned everyone to turn off roaming on their phones anyway. It turns out that because of the mountain on the island blocking the signal from the UK, lots of phones automatically connect to Irish providers, and cost more than people expect

  • I like the look of these, thanks :)

I'll have to skip Artix for this job, as I'm still relatively new to Linux, and can't afford to be learning lots with this, but it's definitely one I'm going to try out and play with :)

  • It looks great, thanks :)

I'm nojt sure whether I'm going to use it for this, as I haven't had a chance to try the package manager yet, but I'm definitely going to be giving it a test drive, even if it's only to see what it can do with such low requirements :)

  • Thanks for replying :)

I do like the idea of Arch, and need to give it a try. I won't use it on these though as, at least for now, I don't know enough about it to be able to repair it if something goes wrong, especially if I need access quickly.

  • Good choices, thanks :)

Alpine looks insane, with those low storage requirements. I need to try it out and see how I get on with the package manager though.

  • That looks good, thanks. I use Xubuntu on my media server at the moment, so I'm used to XFCE too :)

  • I know they're not getting drunk off a sip, and didn't say that the sip was the free drink.

They'd do this to young single guys, the type who looked naive, and flirtily take a sip from the guy's drink, making it clear that they wanted a drink of their own. The guy, usually being drunk and stupid, would fall for it and buy them drinks for as long as they kept flirting. At the end of the night, the girls would drop the act and just walk away.

Obviously, nobody owes anyone else anything, and this clearly isn't what OP was doing but if you've been burned by someone taking advantage in the past, you're more likely to think that's what's happening again.

  • Oh, no, one of the guys took great pleasure in taking the disc out and handing it to the customer in front of everyone :D

  • I witnessed something like this once. I worked for a pawn shop, wiping and reinstalling Windows on computers they were selling, but occasionally working on one of the counters if they were short staffed.

One day a regular customer brought his PS2 in to trade, so it had to be tested first. The manager took it as a training moment for me and and a few others, and connected it to the main TVs around the store so that we could all see how he checked the system.

The customer had left a rather hardcore DVD in the drive and completely forgotten about it, until it started playing on the big screen, and everyone in the store learned about his preferences.

  • I've said this before, but if there was a basic distro that named programs things like Internet Browser and Letter Writer, a massive amount of normal computer users could be switched fairly easily.

The vast majority of people use their computer to launch a browser and maybe use a word processor every now and then. It's why the Chromebook type laptops are so popular - they do everything that most people want.

  • Just block that wobbly bag of pig shit and move on. The rest of us like you 👍

  • I used to work for one of the big game retailers in the UK, and we didn't do that, we would just scan the generic barcode. That was about 15 years ago though, so things may be different now.

  • I'm in the UK, and have been with my wife for about 20 years, so the context might be different, but when I was young and single, that was a big red flag.

I know it's not the way you meant it, but back then, the girls who did that were generally hard work. There was probably an 80 / 20 chance that they expected you to buy them drinks all night, and were just doing it for the free drinks. If you didn't buy them, they'd grab the next guy who looked daft enough to fall for it.

Unfortunately once you've been caught out by a few people like that, you tend to be suspicious of the genuine people too.

Probably the best thing you could have done afterwards was to buy him a drink and say something like, sorry, I didn't mean any offence, and leave him alone. Let him make the next move if there is one.

  • Same here. I saw a video comparing a few tools, so I tried Upscayl. The result was awful and nothing like the comparison in the video.

It may have been something to do with that particular image, but either way, it didn't work for me.

  • which is why people always wipe them before playing

As an aside, don't wipe records. While dust is unlikely to damage it, scraping something across the surface can cause scratches which can affect the playback. An air duster is your best bet 👍
