  • What a cool event! I haven’t read those books in forever, but I remember them!

  • My Nalgene has been with me for at least 16 years and still holding up fine other than the logo/printing wearing off!

  • I make a cucumber salad similar to this and add a little bit of feta cheese, too.

  • I think the only things I’ve given up because of an ex were things I was only into because they were into them, and not because I was. So not things I loved or enjoyed independently.

  • The publisher DK had a few different series of nonfiction books. I remember some with these really cool detailed cross sections of different things, and another series that was just full of cool photos and trivia. Seems like they had a ton of different books but I can’t remember the specific titles!

Edit: did some googling and at least one of the series was the DK Eyewitness books. They still look like they would be fun to read!

  • If you’re interested in in humorous sci-fi, then check out The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

  • No, but I did have to have parental permission to check out The Shining.

  • Love the color! What kind of flowers are these?

  • Me either. I’m a “normie,” I guess, and it feels unwelcoming and condescending.

  • I just learned about the whole idea of retro handhelds the other day and I had no idea there were so many options! These look like they would be really fun, but I would have no idea how to load games onto them (because it looks like they don’t use cartridges for the most part?). That’s beyond my tech knowledge, ha ha!

  • Wow, I had no idea this was a thing!

With the flood of AI content now published at Amazon, sometimes attributed to authors in a misleading or fraudulent manner, how can anyone reasonably expect working authors to spend every week for the rest of their lives policing this? And if authors don’t police it, they will certainly hear about it, from readers concerned about these garbage books, and from readers who credulously bought this crap and have complaints. Or authors might not hear any thing at all, and lose a potential reader forever.

I find this upsetting as a reader, I imagine these writers are absolutely horrified.

  • All right the “Booker Dozen” joke made me smile. Thanks for the list, I’ll have to check these out!

  • Looks like a relaxing place!

  • She has another one called The Genius of Birds that’s also good!

  • Right? I haven’t signed up for Threads, but I definitely wouldn’t want a feed of random stuff the algorithm wants to show me, instead of people I actually want to follow.

  • The Bird Way by Jennifer Ackerman has a really interesting chapter about cuckoos (and other brood parasites) and their hosts. Also just a really good read if you’re interested in bird intelligence!

  • I always love seeing interpretations of tarot decks. Cool idea!

  • Really enjoyed his book as well. While all the tech stuff was cool, what really impressed me was how much he was able to do by just acting confident and working the people around him. Like calling up companies and asking for information (with just enough insider knowledge) and getting what he needed. The social aspect was really interesting to read about!

  • I’ve been using Memmy for that Apollo-like experience, ha ha!

I’ve been trying to comment and post way more, too. Feels nice trying to grow/participate in communities instead of just getting lost in a sea of rage bait. So far I’m liking the slower pace and kinder tone here!

  • I’m really enjoying the vibe of Lemmy so far! Still figuring out how to effectively discover communities on other instances, but I’ll get there eventually.
