  • Putin has a lot more influence on the daily life of me and most other people here yet I almost never see him discussed.

I don't think that talking shit about Elon on Lemmy has any difference on what he does or says. Here's virtually no one to even convert. People are preaching to the choir.

  • I've been wondering the same about Elon Musk. Here seemingly nobody likes him yet there's a daily feed of articles about him with haters talking shit in the comments. Since I don't follow celebrity news and I have him blocked on twitter that dude would effectively not exist to me if it wasn't for Lemmy constantly providing me updates on what he's up to.

Why pay attention to something that just makes you angry..

  • My girlfriend did the exact same thing. That knife had literally just came off the stone. Sliced right thru the tip of her finger including the nail.

When it comes to the quality of the knife itself I think you'll see diminishing returns after you pay more than 70 euros for one. The jump from a dollar store knife to a Victorinox is huge but from Victorinox to a japanese hand made one is much less different.

  • Then the correct comparison would be to say you take your knives to get professionally sharpened instead of doing it yourself.

The way a pull thru sharpener works is completely different from a diamond / whetstone. It's a scraper, not grinder. It's like the mechanic doing an oil change with rapeseed oil.

  • knife doesn’t need to be razor sharp to function nicely

No, but if it's not razor sharp after sharpening then it wasn't sharpened properly and it'll be dull again in a week. Properly apexed edge with the burr removed stays razor sharp for months. Improperly sharpened knife cuts well for a week because you're cutting with the burr but after it bends you've got to resharpen it again.

  • Most people almost never sharpen their knives so from that standpoint using a pull through sharpener is already an improvement. Dishwasher I don't understand however. If I always put my kitchen knife into the diswasher after use I'd never be able to use it because it would be constantly in there. Instead I just quickly scrub it under hot water from the tap and dry it with a towel. Takes me 15 seconds and it's ready for next use and stays razor sharp for months.

  • I don't know about Cybertruck but other Teslas rank high up in the safest cars ever tested. Would be surprising if this wouldn't apply to cybertruck too though who knows.

Edit: also, 15 to 20k units sold and this is the first fatal crash involving one

  • It's unfortunelately really hard to get a building permit on a island. They're virtually always vacation home plots. Funnily enough though islands are usually cheaper than the equivalent size of land on the mainland.

  • If my memory serves, in the early days of free online porn the step-prefix wasn't generally used. I can dimly remember the time it started appearing all over and I always suspected it was because implying it was actual incest was a bit too taboo so they modified the titles into step-porn so that it's not as provocative. Maybe advertisers had something to do with it, who knows. Or maybe it's because they realized that people find it easier to fantasize about step-siblings rather than biological ones.

  • We'll see if this is going to be controversial or not but isn't the entire "step" -part of it there only to give people plausible deniability about incest accusations? It's incest these people are turned on by. To my knowledge having sex with your step-anything isn't incest because you two aren't related.

Either way, I think that most people who like watching mom-son, brother-sister, dad-daughter etc. porn usually aren't sexually drawn towards their own family. They just like the idea of sex between family members in general but not their own.

  • The way I think about it is that we're all "snowflakes". No two people are exactly the same. So while one can correctly claim to be unique that also applies to everyone else. It's not like everyone else is the same but you're unique. Also, being unique doesn't automatically mean someone is better than others - one can also be uniquely bad.

  • I haven't claimed it doesn't imply fragility too. Just that the uniqueness is the primary meaning of it - thus the term snowflake. "I'm unique and thus deserving of special treatment"

If it was primarily about fragility then we'd probably be using some other term as that is not generally the first feature that comes to mind about snowflakes.

  • Wikipedia and most dictionary definitions talk about uniqueness. Each snowflake is unique. That's what most people mean by it.

Snowflake is a derogatory slang term for a person, implying that they have an inflated sense of uniqueness, an unwarranted sense of entitlement, or are overly emotional, easily offended, and unable to deal with opposing opinions.

You are not special. You are not beautiful or unique snowflake. Quote from the novel "Fight Club"

  • What do you mean by AI? ChatGPT?

Just because the AI systems we have today aren't what most people thought they would be, it doesn't mean in a few years it's not a whole different game.

This isn't like we invented AI and it sucked so we declare it a waste of time. The AI of today is like those massive "mobile" phones we had 30 years ago with 15 minutes of battery life. It's the first iteration of it. This is the worst it will ever be. In a decade or so it will be unrecognizeable compared to the AI systems we have then.
