I don't have rich parents nor am I rich myself but I get by and are more or less content with my finances. My secret was getting a training for a job where I work with my hands and now people that don't want to get their hands dirty pay me a good amount of money to do it for them. I also don't need to worry about AI/automation taking my job.
I handed out 4 just yesterday. I guess it depends on the kind of work you're doing. I'm a home improvement contractor and people often ask if they can give my number to their friend/neighbour etc. so I just hand them few business cards to spread around.
I don't understand why one should leave notifications on even if they did use those apps. I honestly feel like the phone app is the only one for which it's justified to be allowed to demand your immediate attention. I'd argue that notifications for even text messages are unecessary unless maybe if it's someone like your parents, spouse or kids.
Yeah I'm there with you. My phone is the most boring device imaginable. It makes no sounds, gives no notifications and has no games or social media. I use it for whatsapp, phone calls, photography, listening to podcasts, tracking my finances, taking notes and browsing Lemmy while on the toilet and given how boring I've made my Lemmy feed as well I really struggle to spend more than 5 minutes here unless I'm having an ongoing debate.
When I come home I leave my phone on the table by the door and when I grab it with me when I go to bed because it's also my alarm clock. I never ever use my phone in the bed either. My screen-on-time averages around 1.5 hours a day.
However, I also watch 8 hours of YouTube on my laptop each day so I'm no better than the rest of the people.
I quess we need a billion more variations of those emojis then. Lets keep paying more attention to the skin color of people. That seems like a great idea.
You sound like the kind of people that would have proclaimed it’s idiotic to give women rights, or let them vote, or give LGBTQ+ people rights of marriage or whatever.
The yellow should be the only one. I find it absolutely idiotic that they needed to include all different skin colors. I think that's similar to my native language (Finnish) not having gender specific pronouns (hän = he/she) and then someone wanting to come up with ones. That's "fixing" a problem that didn't even exist in the first place.
Preventing additional carbon emissions doesn't decrease what's already in the atmosphere. We would need some form of carbon capture even if we stopped all emissions today.
all of this information is critical to understanding and empathizing with the people you might meet in your own society
No it's not. I already know about the issue with police violence in the USA. I don't need to be reminded about it with daily articles of such individual events. I also know what Elon Musk is like and I don't need to read a new hit piece on him every time he says something stupid again and then go to the comment section to circle-jerk with all the other haters.
This is recreational outrage. Nobody gets more informed because of this masochism. They just get more angry and cynical. It's objectively making the world a worse place. Some old granny without an internet access who goes to pick trash from the side of the road is having a bigger positive impact on the world than the vast majority of people posting and reacting to these rage-bait articles.
That's quite unfair to suggest that not wanting to spend all day looking at negativity on the internet means one doesn't care about it or even embraces it. There's a healthy middle ground where you're informed but not spending all day every day thinking about it. No matter how many articles like that you read every single day you're still going to miss the vast majority of them. That's a never ending battle that you're never going to win. If you want to make the world a better place then be the change you want to see in it. Doomerism is just self-harm and making things worse.
I've got a blocklist over 600 users long here and it's growing every day. If I see a person make even one mean comment I block them immediately. Same applies to the people commenting stuff like "acab" or "fuck x" and similar. Doesn't matter wether I agree with them or not. That single comment is all I need to know about how they behave online. I'm not interested in hearing more from them. I know they're being perfectly nice on another thread, but I don't care. There's a near-infinite number of content available online. If I'm in a room with 100 people, I don't want to talk with all of them. The few percent of intellectually honest and not-mean people are all I need for an interesting and enjoyable conversation.
