  • He told me he wanted to quit, he quit, he is still happy he quit. He sees it as a positive. After watching my grandparents die slowly and painfully of smoke-caused cancer, I am glad he quit too. It improved his quality of life, and he is a happier, less angry person. But you can draw any conclusion you want.

  • The hubbie used to smoke. When we got together, I informed him he gets smoke or me, and he put himself on a plan to quit and stuck to it. He still says he made the right decision, many years later. If he smokes I can smell it even days afterward, but it is one every six months, and he always eventually tells me about them, so in my opinion he kept his promise of quitting.

I recommend a sympathetic friend or quitting partner as the most effective method.

  • I suspect that if you ask lemmy users then they will go Mastodon because we tend to go "yay federation yay" but if you surveyed the same question somewhere else you would get a different answer.

Last time I tried Twitter you still had to pay your 20c for an sms to the site to get it published, and I never tried BS or Mastodon. I did like the shortness of the sms-based microblogging platform, but it didn't stay that way.

  • As they aren't nuts, peanuts are different to true nuts. The yanks put them with chocolate and sweeteners, which are pretty awful, but they are a better savoury nut in my opinion. I eat peanut butter & tomato sandwiches, but Aussie peanut butter contains no sugar or sweeteners. Just nuts. So not really possible to know what that tastes like if you are in America. I love gado-gado, a south east asian sauce dish made of peanuts and chillis, very strong, and it wouldn't work with other nuts. It is served over roasted meat and vegetables. Really good.

They taste most similar to cashews I guess, but peanuts are not the same as cashews. They taste nothing like hazelnuts or walnuts or almonds. Some people love the flavour, others not so much, but you aren't missing much if you don't eat them. If it is safe to do so, smell them and see if you like the smell, I guess.

  • I also recommend tomato, onion and peanut butter (the sweetener-free version, a yank offered me a foul sweetened version of peanut butter and I now specify the one made exclusively of peanuts)

And cheese-and-honey is a not unusual school lunch sandwich option here in Australia. But then, so is cheese and vegemite.

  • People say "party" but really it is an awkward conversation generator. Unpleasant.

I get bored easily, so I bring instruments and play along with the music or the other musicians. Or, increasingly, I am the music.

I also bring my spindle, or my sewing. Or I stand around the kitchen helping with the food. Find a thing you do well, whether it is barbecuing skewers on the hotplate or pouring drinks, and then it will be a thing to do with your hands making for less awkward. Be helpful. And don't get too drunk because drunk people aren't as awesome as they think they are.

  • Mate, I am in a union, and the Teachers Federation even got us our pay rise, which should start this month. We are all looking forward to it. But school is over fast, I find I forget to eat at the gaps, better to eat before and after school.

  • Every time Voyager screws up again (so, a lot of the time) I use Memmy again. For example, when it decides to show me the same "three day" old article first up for a week or more despite being reloaded and even reinstalled. I have Memmy permanently installed on my phone at this point.
