  • It’s become a habit, that’s how we always abbreviate it.
You can also pronounce it as SinJapore, so I guess that’s why? I don’t know, I just follow my partner’s example :)
    edit:
Official UN/LOCODE is also SG, so I guess that settles it.

  • You've got a point, and individually I wouldn't dare to question someone's gender (I barely have a grip on my own :)
All I have is the article provided. A little searching did get me to this article which details some very awful behavior though.
I guess it's more that the purpose for this entire event, to give (trans)women and non-binary people opportunities to establish a career in tech and to celebrate them, is being subverted. Space and time was limited and the extra influx of men (who clearly weren't there for the main purpose but to job hunt) put a big strain on both.
There's not much you can do about it, but that doesn't make it right.

  • Not a resident but my partner is from SG. One of the reasons I often hear is that families(mom, dad, kids, grandparents) like to travel together, and the elderly are not always mobile enough for public transport. Public transport is really fantastic, but it doesn’t cover every single need.
And of course it’s a status symbol, some feel the need to show they’ve got the wealth to own a car.
Again, I hear these things second hand and am colored by my partner’s beliefs :) Maybe a SG resident has a better (or different) explanation.
    edit:
In my eagerness to share, I realize this doesn’t really answer your question. Sorry about that :)

  • Well my day off really helped, napped throughout the day and slept alone at night for a change (my partner can be very restless in her sleep).
Hopefully things will improve from here on out.

  • Harder, but not imposible.

Too bad.. I was hoping this could be a temporary fix. At least to weed out the laziest copy cats.

  • So.. first things first. I'm a happy Midjourney user and post quite a bit of stuff over at one of the other Lemmy communities (same name, different account). But, I only use the AI for fun and never for profit. I can give tons of justifications but in the end it comes down to this: I'm a crappy artist and I have a vivid imagination. AI gives me an outlet to visualize the things in my head and the rush of seeing them in real is really nice.

That being said. One of the things I don't do, is write prompts like "in the style of ....". Specifically because I don't want it to be a copy of someone's work, even if it is for personal use. It feels (and obviously is) wrong.
Maybe not a perfect solution, but they should remove all the artist names (those alive or less than 50(?) years dead) from the current models. If your name isn't in it, then it'll be a lot harder to recreate your style.
In the longer run, a register of what prompt and which model were used for AI generated images might help with copyright claims? The EU is already busy with legislation for registering AI models. This might be a logical follow-up?

I'm just throwing out ideas at this point. I'm not an expert in any of these fields (AI, legal, copyright, etc.) All I know is that it would definitely be a net loss for society if small artists are no longer able to make a living practicing their profession.

  • This is just disgraceful. I understand times are tough, but to basically ruin an event just for your own personal gains. It's just not right.
Is there any way this can be prevented in the future?

  • I haven't been sleeping well at all. Keep waking up at around 4, unable to fall back asleep again. Because of this there are times where become very nasty and hateful for no reason at all, and I really hate it. It's not who I usually am, and not who I want to be.
I guess I just have a lot on my mind and it's just not possible to shut down the endless grinding of these thoughts going through my head.
Taking a sick day today to catch up on my sleep and rest, hopefully things will look a little brighter tomorrow.

  • I'm going to make a voxel 3d model of... something, first week is partly about picking my subject :)
I'm not skilled enough for 3d modelling tools like blender, but the more simple Minecraft like system of adding and removing blocks seems doable for someone like me.

  • Hi anothermember, nice to meet you!
Hope you'll have good time here :)

  • Oh, I never considered this before. I haven’t had any reason so far to block anyone, but would definitely like to know if the other party will be notified or not if it ever comes to it. I’d hate for bullies to find out if I blocked them or not, it would just encourage them to keep harassing me.
I would like to try an experiment, I’m going to block you (temporarily). Can you see if that symbol will pop up next to my name? I’ll unblock again in 24 hours or so.

  • I love playing/writing interactive stories with an AI. A dream game of mine would be an RPG/Adventure game that extends this to a fully realized game that adapts to how you want to play.
Want to be the adventurer who slays the evil monster and saves the kingdom? Go right ahead!
Prefer to stop halfway, settle down and become the village baker, getting involved in the town's intrigues? Also fine!
It would probably be too much to ask to turn this into a full-fledged 3d world with high detail. But a consistent Visual Novel would be a really great next step.

  • The idea of some portable personal decorations do sound nice. My first instinct was to be dismissive (it's just how I am, don't take it personal) but the more I consider it, the more it sounds like a fun little project :)

Oh I love the smokey scent, it's just that other people are a bit.. startled by it. I used to work in a team room and had a proper black, cast iron, tea pot in which I made tea for the whole team. So, one day I made a pot of the Lapsang Souchong tea. The smell became rather overwhelming and it didn't take long for people outside the team room to start looking around for signs of a fire with rather worried expressions :)
I managed to explain what was going on but decided it was best to limit the brewing of that particular tea to the early mornings when I'm usually alone.

  • Can they invent a few more of these kinds of Tik Tok trends?
The kind where they’re tricked into doing something healthy and harmless? I imagine an army of troll nutritionists thinking up new challenges :)

    edited because Thelsim doesn’t proofread

  • I doubt they're going to introduce a lot of new infrastructure from the beginning. It's probably going to be signs and new regulations at first. Like when they restricted mopeds from using the bicycle lanes.
Maybe I'm mistaken though. I'm not a resident, I just work in Amsterdam.

The problem about speeds is not so much how serious an injury you get when you have a collision, but more how much damage you cause to others. Especially during rush hour, the lanes can be crowded with people going to work, kids going to school, etc.
As long as everyone cycles at about the same speed, it's not that much of a problem. But those bigger e-bikes are way faster (and heavier) and can cause quite a bit of damage when they hit someone. Preferably they should create separate lanes for faster cyclists instead of forcing them on the motorways.

Anyway, if you're interested I did a quick search about the problem and got you a translated link to a recent article about the problems.

  • Those who choose the bike path must adhere to a speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour.

Thank goodness. Some of those e-bikes are becoming a serious menace on the bicycle paths these days. There's a growing trend where especially fat bikes get modified to go faster than their original speed and without having to actually pedal. I wonder how they're going to enforce this though.

  • I love your optimism, thanks :)
    edit
Just to make sure, I mean this sincerely. I appreciate the positive vibes :)

  • Thank you for the thorough explanation. The whole residuals issue sounds very complicated, and it's probably on purpose if it's up to the streaming services to manage this themselves.

  • Reading some of the replies here makes me wish we didn't use flex work spaces. I have to keep my personal belongings in a locker whenever I go home. I'd love to have a desk I can decorate :)
Anyway, I keep Lapsang Souchong tea in my locker and like to brew a strong mug before I start my day. Then I just sit on the couch in the lounge area and stare outside for a while and enjoy my tea. The tea stinks of smoke, so early morning is the only time of the day I can enjoy it without people complaining.

  • Those are some great accomplishments!
Are there any points on which they had to concede or compromise?
