  • One of the things I wonder is if an automated internet would cause people to place more value on physical real life interactions. In an internet where all activities, even videos and audio could be the product of advanced machines, perhaps people will prioritize the only thing left they can be sure actually came from a human, physical interactions. Maybe not, but it's interesting to think about.

  • It's honestly really interesting how the senses can overlap. It's also kind of like even if you're blind you can still feel light, infrared and low frequency light warms the skin and ultraviolet and other high frequency light at first feels refreshing before eventually causing burns. I think it's one of those things that shows even though we all experience the world differently, we also still share in the fact that we are experiencing it.

  • Alright, I don't think people calling Omgarm a heretic understand. Omgarm is a hero, they eat the soft fries so that we don't have to. We all live in the shadow of their sacrifice.

  • On the one hand, sushi is delicious. On the other hand, I don't like parasites and raw meat is one of the most common sources of them. This I think is one of the fundamental conflicts of humanity.

  • To be fair, what is and isn't legal is a political issue, so violence used to enforce laws is definitionally political violence. I think the more important issue is whether that violence is justified, which it is sometimes but often is not (this goes for the police in a large number of nations, not just the United States).

  • Random person: Hey Hitler, can you please stop doing the Holocaust.
    Hitler: Nein.
Random person: Damn, guess I can't do anything. If I used force to stop Hitler from committing a genocide I would be just as bad, because everyone knows killing a Nazi who wants to kill every Jew and killing an innocent Jewish person are equal moral acts.

I honestly don't understand how people think like this. All they do is enable fascism and the imperial ambitions of more aggressive nations. As long as we live in a world with sovereign nations, some of those nations may do something extremely wrong that requires a war to stop, and that doesn't mean you just let them do it. Ultimately, war is bad but genocide is worse and sometimes sacrifices have to be made (exclusion existing for nuclear war, which would render humanity and most of life on Earth extinct).

  • I really like Typescript, I think it's a more smooth programming experience than raw JS or even other high level languages like Python . However, I don't mind JavaScript as much as many other programmers so I suppose I'm a bit biased.

  • Honestly, I'm surprised the algorithm doesn't start with more benign stuff. The best tuned algorithms start with low-controversy popular content, like pictures of cats, then slowly as it learns about the user begins introducing personal interests and rage bait depending on what the user interacts with.

  • To be fair, that's microblogging in general. Mastadon, KBin, Bluesky, Twitter, and Threads all fall victim to this to varying degrees.

  • YouTube and Google are unlikely to fall, but when and if Google ever does so will YouTube. YouTube is a money pit and has no competitors because it's not viable, video hosting is too expensive relative to the money they make from the platform. Google has been seeding YouTube with capital from their own more successful services, but Google's search engine isn't nearly as good as it used to be and their cloud and web stuff isn't nearly as popular as Amazon or Microsoft, so we'll see.

  • Uh oh, don't let it spread or our world will turn into artifacting hell.

  • That's completely fair. I've noticed for memes that are strange and unexpected for me it's completely random chance whether I find it hilarious or I don't get it.

  • Honestly yeah, both the idea and execution behind these glasses is really neat.

  • Beehaw's really friendly, and I like the space that instance has been building. Overall though, I've noticed all of Lemmy is generally more positive than Reddit, it's really refreshing.

  • My federation policy is currently fairly open, I've only defederated exploding-heads and burgitt. I'm open to making it more restrictive but would like to hear user opinions first.

  • No problem, I'm glad to help 👍

  • I have no idea what this meme means

  • Ah, fair enough. I suppose to be technical, saying you shouldn't tolerate intolerance is a semantic paradox but not a logical one.
