Depression is definitely a factor for many people. But the death of 3rd spaces is fairly well documented. The problem is that many people don't know how to make friends. Friends very rarely happen instantly, they usually are a result of repeated and consistent interactions. Adults rarely seek out situations that would give them those types of interactions outside of work and school.

Sorry, but this sounds exactly like what male privilege is. Assuming that it doesn't happen near you because you haven't noticed it.

Ask your female friends what sorts of sexism they genuinely face regularly and I think you'll learn a lot.

In a weird way, having emotionally available and supportive parents is absolutely a privilege. People are able to develop empathy in spite of bad parents, and good parenting isn't a guarantee to a good person, but parenting is a major factor for life success. I wish it weren't, and I hope we can build a society that could guarantee every child full opportunities.

Chess is a war game. Killing and violence in general are devastating. It'd be interesting to compare the brain activity of a murderer with a grandmaster player. I have my suspicions about what we would see.

I'd LOVE a resource like that! I'm sure it exists but I never found it, and it is a silly thing to be hung up on but I just didn't properly understand the folder structure. I've still used Linux plenty but I'm dragging my feet on using it as a daily driver, but I'm VERY close to making the jump.

Calls and easily sharing my screen are 90% of my use cases for Discord. The entire appeal of it initially was that it was a more functional Ventrilo with both text and voice channels. Hopefully something FOSS gets further developed by the time Discord completely shits the bed.

That's fair, but for awhile that setting only worked on desktop, and various apps still may or may not respect the setting. I've never encountered someone who enjoys this being on be default.

It's obviously not great for the type of community that's about knowledge sharing and learning, and it does suck that a lot of communities went there.

But it's a great platform for simple social servers that are just about communicating. It's super easy to sign up and set up a server. A lot of it just works well for chat.

Them going public probably puts a timer on the service though, so if it happens Discord probably just will get worse.

3rd party can't really gain power with first past the post. We have to implement ranked choice or approval voting before meaningful 3rd party choices are viable.

You're right, if you alone can't fix everything, there's really no point to trying.

For me the problem is technicians who are arriving during some multi hour window of time.

Everyone has different thresholds for action. When you're talking about replacing your entire professional toolset, it might make sense that they were resistent.

I think the way we consume news has gotten incredibly unhealthy. The rush to know things as fast as possible has lowered the quality of news, and mixing the news into your entertainment feed of the entire day might be weird for our brain.

I feel you though. There's shitty things happening in the world and it doesn't seem like it's helpful to anyone for me to know about every little instance. I wish I could just get detailed stories for local news, and just get general stats for national stuff.

People see a sample size of 30 and assume it's instantly a bad study. A small sample size can still have considerable power depending on the experimental design and assuming that the sample is actually random across the target population. At the very least, it's information that can be used to guide the experimental design of future studies.
