  • This threatens to be a bigger brain drain than just elite University-level scientists. I know of several US IT professionals who are in the process of getting European citizenship through parent and grandparent eligibility. And some of these are moderate conservatives, not just liberals. There's a lot of unease at least on the coasts.

I'm weighing up moving back to the UK myself. After over two decades I had never felt the need to even consider this before now. Hopefully it won't come to that, not least because it would mean uprooting my entire family, it works be a big headache, and because I know the UK isn't a bed of roses right now either. But the way shit is rapidly unraveling here in the US, I might not have a choice in a few years.

  • Definitely. It will be a good dry run for what's going to come in a few months time. The GOP are going to blame Democrats for any inconveniences streaming from funding regardless. So they should just embrace the block. And push the message that this is what we're heading towards anyway.

  • "Scruffy's on break!"

  • I'm not sure, but probably. I know there was a guy who was in a maximum security prison and often put in solitary confinement for long stretches who said in an interview that he learned to go into a meditative state and project himself into fully immersive scenes of his own creation. And he could do that for hours on end and at will.

  • All this bullshit is tiring. Abolish the NATO veto and just give Ukraine membership of it already.

  • I am shocked! Shocked I say!

Who would have thought that with his best buddy back in the Whitehouse and Ukraine cut off from some financial and military support as a result, that the Kremlin would feel emboldened to reject any kind of peace deal?!

Putin knows that now his stooge is President he can put much do whatever the hell he wants when it comes to Ukraine. At least for a while - until Europe gets a strategy in place (if that happens), and until Russia's runs out of breathing conscripts.

Here's hoping the rest of the West can provide enough support quickly to keep Ukraine from losing a huge chunk of their territory.

  • You can be academically brilliant but still a very poor judge of people.

  • Everyone without a brain worm: "citation needed!"

  • Without missing a beat, McBride responded by thanking Self and referring to him as “madam chair.”

Haha, the perfect response. Good retort, Rep McBride.

  • It's basically the evolution (or devolution?) of the Internet in a capitalist global economy. This is just the next step in the effort to profit off digital Data and communications.

Back in the early 2000s pretty much everything was free to use, and revenue came from passive ads. Then ad blindness and ad blockers kicked in, revenue went down, and the cat and mouse game began of companies trying to find ways of getting clicks and views while the consumer didn't want to do that. This has escalated over the last 20-odd years.

We're now at a point where paywalls are fairly effective (for now). So that's what's being pushed. Plus, subscriptions and everything-as-a-service is in vogue right now.

I expect that will end when the money-making enshitification of the Internet reaches a critical mass and the economy nosedives for various reasons.

  • What happened around the middle of February that caused that slight but sharp drop-off?

  • Isn't driving around in one of those poorly-made death trap vehicles enough then?...

    ...Nah, probably not.

  • Fits in perfectly with the Tesla brand then, doesn't it.

  • Can we switch JD with Nate? Nate sounds like he is much closer to presidential material than his dipshit, couch-fucking joke of a cousin.

  • Musk calls it a "massive cyber attack".

I call it "systemic infrastructure and personnel losses caused by the malignant narcissistic man-child who is running the company into the ground".

  • Given the context, no I don't think you are being aloof. They both knew what they were doing, and no amount of toadying up to you can make up for that.

  • As an American, I can't blame you for having this sentiment. Canada and Canadians don't deserve the stupid shit the Trump administration and its followers are dishing out. Like many here, I'm disgusted that we are treating one of our closest abd staunchest allies in such a crappy way. I hope you guys continue to play hardball on this stuff.

  • You weren't kidding.

Digg’s new leaders say they want to use artificial intelligence to “handle the grunt work” of running a social media site while allowing humans to focus on building meaningful online communities.

I know they are talking about moderation. But it's hard to see them not pushing AI out into other areas of their ecosystem. Especially when they will be struggling for users from the start, and thus they will struggle for content.
