  • I'm one of those that just can't avoid using windows at work. At least at work they come with a very useful adition, windows sysadmins. They already learned that giving Linux apecialists admin rights. (It gets harder and harder to deny any Windows knowledge)

Haven't used windows at home since 3.11.

  • I have several games for a lazy evening on the sofa, so it depends on the mood.

I hoard virtual cars, tanks and ships, so I pick CSR2 when I want to do an event there (daily boring grinding tasks are automated). When I want to shoot I either junp in World of Tanks Blitz or World of Warships Blitz.

When in a mood where I want to just tap around, I dust off Hay Day.

Gershwin Impact has been on the tablet, but after a few attempts to play it, it's removed again. Looks nice, but not my style, yet.

  • I was playing CSR2 (still am) and was searching for some info when I found the CSR2 community there.

  • Had twitter, deleted an account twice (1st time as I was fed up with it, 2nd time I still didn't see the use of it and Musk bought it)

Have fb, didn;t use it for years, wanted to delete account but 'due to EU law change you must choose between targeted ads or subscription of €12.99 a month before you have acces tto your account'. There is no option to delete without either coonsent or paying. (So it'll either linger forever of finally get deleted)

Have Reddit, still check in from time to time in 3 game related subs, ditched the rest.

Have Discord account, but again only game related.

Lemmy is the only account I have that's closest to 'random social', rest, is either topic specific or ignored.

Reddit is PC only (browser), Lemmy is small reading tablet only, discord is pc and mobile, as I run 1 server for a game related team I'm leader of. Only personal mentiones may give a silent notification.

Can you live without socials: I'd say yeah. The random sewer socials (FB/xitter) are ditched here, what's active I see more as fora then social media.

  • When searching, dots, when downloading, who cares?

When searching, dots act as and, spaces as or (at least in qtorrent). The dots makes searching easier.

  • You could build something that prevents people from being offended. Let them answer simple questions like are you offenden by . If they answer yes, no allowed to join.

I get the feeling that more and more snowflakes are easily offended and the nastiness is partly trolling as they like to offend. (and sometimes the offended like to be offended)

Maybe the only solution is sulfuric acid. (or alcohol)

  • They doubled before, they'll double again, and crash.

When you sell the house at a huge profit, you'll have to spend all again to buy one back, probably more as you have transfer costs, decorate, move,... Yes, houses have economical value, but for all it's a necessity to be able to live in one.

  • Yeah, ok, lots of things changed in '20/'21, but housing is a long term investment. Almosta always owning something is cheaper then letting/renting/leasing, as you pay extra to the middleman to take a way some hasstle.

  • In short: massive distrust of the customers.

Also, loyalty cards cost money to make, so they discurrage the use of those as well. You can use handscanners from the store itself, but then you'll have to scan the virtual card in the app to be able to start shopping, have a cumbersome scanner and no total for your groceries displayed. WHen you still need the app, why not scan with it.

The sticker seems to be for personel after checkout to see that the crate of beer has been bought and paid for (with the receipt, although legal, not being good enough.

Even though there is a huge distrust, still those self scan isn't been dismantled and replaced by regular checkouts, nah, that would be to logical and you'd have to admit you made a mistake.

  • Yeah, that's what was the situation here as well, until the grocery prizes exploded and customers started to scan a few items and taking the rest without paying. (so yeah, shoplifting made very easy) Especially this store seems to be a target, as it's way out of the regular routes. It looks like they're starting to notice the drawback of the idea.

  • Love the Debian conclusion. they just might deserve the superiority complex. (I have to admit, Debian is pretty stable)

BTW love the Centurions in WoTB, great tanks, all of them.

  • Fedora is the beta of CentOS, which is the beta of RedHat/Rocky.

Ehm, the French BDR G1 B? (picking a tank from WoTB, designed but never bult as successor of B1)

  • Make it impossible for people to use it?

Wherever there are people, there will be nastiness. No matter the reason, some are jerks just because they can.

  • I liked them as well, those self checkouts. Use the app from the store, scan what you need, have a total at hand, checkout and leave. That was how it went at the start.

    Now it's:

    • start app
    • battle with the wifi, as the store requires you yo use their wifi to be able to scan, let alone check out
    • have a grocery check at checkout (and need to pack it again, as no, they just take out, not repack)
    • when buying alcohol, have an age check
    • when buying a crate of beer, wait for the help to get a sticker
    • checkout
    • get a receipt even though you're happy to go paperless and set so in the app
    • get stopped before leaving, as the sticker needs to be put on the crate
    • leave the self checkout area
    • get checked if the crate of beer you have has the sticker (even with 1 item in the cart, the crate and the bloody sticker clearly visible)
    • leave

When you're just going for the crate of beer, you're at least 5x as long busy by jumping trough all hoops at self scan and get treated as shoplifter to boot as well. I'm done with self scan. (especially with the shop closest to home, they lost a customer)

  • Why specific bought in '20/'21? Bought the house as single in '00, monthly costs were about 20% less then renting a similar house in worse configtion. The value then in guilders was less then then now in euro. (about 125% rize in value) and I'm paing in morgage about 75% of what I paid when I bought it. (and that will stay the same for another 7y)

It's a good house and way cheaper then letting. I could see ut as investment, but I need a roof to live under. It's a comfortable and very affordable place to live.

  • The only natural enemy of a cat is a closed door.

Using natuaral in the broadest sence of the word, as we invented them.

  • All that work being done for…, what? The love of work?

Loads of people would do just that, out of curiousity keep themselves busy. When you don't need the income to live, you got to keep yourself busy somehow.

I for one don't have the time to work with all that is interesting to me to spend time on, but alas, I don't have the amount of cash to not have to work. That's why I sell my time and knowledge for a limited amount of time in the week so I can explore all other interests.

  • In Dutch we have a saying "A donkey never walks into the same stone twice". I conclude that donkeys are a lot smarter then most humans, sigh and hope nature will sort this one out.

  • Growing old is mandatory, growing up optional.

  • I've been playing World of tanks blitz. I had fun, then discovered there is a world of warships blitz as well, which has a Dutch line of ships. It was the 1st game I heard of with Dutch content, so I'm now kinda hooked on it, chasing after all Dutch ships. It wasn't exactly the name of the game, but more the hint of the content.

BTW I'm Dutch, when you haven't guessed it already. ;)
