  • I just made a batch of tepache. My first time. Delicious!

I used to bake sourdough quite a lot, but then I developed a wheat allergy. Before the allergy I thought quite a bit about switching careers and baking for a living.

  • Some cutouts in their armor for their nipples would let you use the brown and/or pink crayons.

  • I did enjoy what I was doing for a long time, but eventually it got old. It's like loving chocolate cake but then having to eat it every day for 20 years. Eventually you want something else.

  • The main thing I really want to do is something that will let me give back and help people, so all of that sounds great. I thought about teaching, but I'm also really sick of IT, so I'm not sure. I did recently get a chance to speak to some college students about IT and really enjoyed that, so maybe that would be OK. Otherwise I've considered personal training or maybe even opening a gym.

  • If you want some basic tips, here is what has worked well for me:

    • Surprise enemies as often as you can so you get auto hits (use doors)
    • Focus on one character at a time until you win, then move on to the next - each one requires a different strategy
    • Save up your enchantment scrolls until you get good weapons, armor, rings, etc. Don't dump your enchantment scrolls into a dagger or leather armor. Hold out for a great sword, great axe, etc. and plate armor.
    • Save up scrolls of mapping and potions of mind vision for the demon halls (last levels of the game). They are full of traps and fairly tough enemies so having maps and knowing where enemies are is huge.
  • The obligations thing is huge. Like literally anything I end up doing - even work - will be because I want to and not because I need to.

  • This was a good read! I'm also lucky in that I'm part of an actual retirement plan through the state, although I am also putting money away as well. I actually plan on working, but not in my current industry. Maybe give different things a try and just focus on enjoying myself.

  • I got good enough at it that I could win with no challenges about 2/3 of the time. Hit me up if you ever get stuck.

  • I considered this, but I actually kind of want to get away from teaching what I currently do for a living.

  • Attia puts out good content.

  • Nice! What makes you want to get into that?

  • Maybe. Possibly. Probably not. But who knows?

  • This is part of the reason I have no intention of having anything to do with IT once I retire.

  • Such a good feeling when you finally win, though. The best I've managed is 3 challenges.

  • Shattered Pixel Dungeon with all 9 challenges active. I know there are a few people who have won the game with all 9, but my god is it hard.

  • My two cents having practiced several.

Almost all of them are useful in that they are a form of physical activity. They can keep you in good shape, and can also help you develop discipline.

Many are more art than practical. Arts like krav maga or kali are more geared towards practical use (self defense).

There is also a thing you can generally think of as "energy" that arts may have that often trend to make them not very practical against arts outside of themselves. For example, if a wing chun practitioner attempts to trap with you, and you're a boxer, it just doesn't work. It's somewhat about range, but also the general "feel" of the art as well. JKD attempts to deal with this by teaching different arts that can be used within different ranges.

My one instructor also likened martial arts to technology, saying that they must evolve over time or just end up becoming ineffective for self defense.

The best thing to do in a situation, if you can, is to just escape. Your wallet is not worth your life.
