Personally I disagree with the statement, first off, I don't see an alternative explanation offered. the point is an easy analogy to give them rough concepts. looking at the problems listed in the OP.

Gmail users believe the only ways to access a Gmail account are through the official web client at mail.google.com, and the official Gmail app for iOS and Android.

First off there... so the web client off the bat.... what's the problem there, that we aren't burrying them with "oh if you like you can use alexandrite, or one of 30 other web clients, and then tell it the instance". The point is we're trying to reach out to the non tech savy. If their assumption gets them to something that works, then there isn't a problem, just as not knowing that they can install an e-mail client to check their gmail, isn't stopping them from using gmail.

Now the andriod/ios clients, that is the one drawback, you do have to tell them the name of one of the apps, and tell them to pick the website they made their account on from the dropdown. It's not a huge deal but it is an extra step. If the goal is to reach out to the non tech savy though, the goal has to be to minimize the steps as much as we can.

Then it goes on to say people are picking instances based on moderation politics etc... Lets face it regular people don't... and they don't care. Really like 2% of people actually hit points where moderation is a visible thing to them. usually because they are on the edge of a political side.

Honestly I'd say lemmy.world is probably the ideal for redditors, I agree it's too big, but it's probably the safest option for people without a lot of knowledge. sh.itjustworks is also IMO fine if you know the person isn't offended by language.

The gist is... streamers are gamer role models. The streamer itself is a drop in the bucket... but either they encourage people that like their behavior to play the game, or they encourage people who play the game to act like them.

I used to play town of salem, the social deduction game... the community was relatively small, but when a mainstream youtube channel like pewdiepie or someoen played the game there'd be a collective groan from the community. As it would always follow up with a huge spike if players who start up the game with zero interest in learning how to play (because the youtuber also didn't learn how to play)... now in those cases that generally was only a week or 2 of annoyance as the obnoxious players either moved on to the next thing, or started actually trying to learn the game instead of just trolling everyone.

The idea that there's solutions to drug use that might be more effective than throw drug users into private prisons to do slave labor seems quite lost on these people.

I suppose it's the deffinition of "credible" in "credible exit". My understanding is, it's a closed in system... that would allow people to export to another closed system built on the same protocol.

The basically impossible part of a social network, is getting people onto the same network at the same time. It's like a hangout place that's open 24/7. Someone comes in, if nobody's there, they themselves leave. 10 minutes later someone else comes, also see's it empty and leaves. The hard part is getting enough people to stick around long enough to make interesting things to make others want to stay around.

To me the only credible exit... is fediverse style. IE not just that you can leave and take your stuff... but more importantly you can still talk with the people who haven't left yet. Because if we are just talking another walled in instance that you can make, that may as well be a new network.

The thing holding people into twitter, isn't they'd horribly miss their years of old tweets they've made and recieved. They'd miss their old contacts that haven't joined the new network yet. Unless I'm massively misunderstanding the way this works... they aren't opening the door for the new networks to be able to communicate with the old one.

I'd imagine just basic economics. Businesses exist to make money. Growing a tech company costs money. Which means someone's gotta be pouring a lot of money into it to grow it. People with that kind of money, aren't in the habit of giving money they don't expect to have a return on investment.

Being the best, getting users that don't pay for the service... does not make money. Things people hate make money, Targeted ads, tracking/spying, or paid services you can direct users to make money. If a company has a semi-captive audience... that's when they are pushed to enshittify.

I honestly don't see the reason to hope for bluesky to win... I don't get this "credible exit". If bluesky choses to abandon it it might be feasible to make it into a decentralized network? Seems to me the decentralized future will have the same difficulties of getting people onto mastadon etc...

More accurately why are they bothering? Question is what exactly is their end here? This just a "lets have a laugh as our business burns". Their service was a download manager and torrent downloader... that just seems on par with say the nitros sellers that pretend to think their products are used to make whipped cream.

I get it, the law cracked down on them, they can't continue to provide the service they were providing, and they know they cannot provide the service that 99.9% of their users use them for. Never mind the fact that basically every big Linux distro plays nicely with secure boot these days, and has for a while now.

In my experience nicely is still pretty relative. It still seems to be the most common area things go wrong on my installs and place I have the hardest time working around...

and the bigger part, it's a solution to a problem that I've never seen happen in the wild, and really can't fathom happening on linux that doesn't involve a very dumb user running software from an unknown source as root.

They've already explained that as their strategy... first thing they are targetting is removing remote work? Why, because they know some people don't want to work in the office, and that's a good way to get a lot of them to quit.

WTF Indeed, yes it's more impressive to stand for something if you are willing to sacrifice your whole life, be willing to live on the streets etc...

Fact is there's not that many people that can do that. There's no safety nets in this country, losing your job isn't just the possibility of having to move to a smaller house, it's the possibility of begging friends and family to stay with them, as the bottom rung of employment isn't even enough to afford a 1 bedroom apartment, and that's of course assuming only you are the one to pay that price, IE wife, kids who need college etc...

Godwin time here, as much as everyone wants to say they'd be the person who hid jews in their attic in ww2, reality is while you can applaud those who did, you can't really look down on those who didn't. The risks of completely ruining not just your own life, but the lives of those who you care the most about, to save complete strangers, is not a decision that is ever a given for anyone to make.

Not a legal expert but from what I've read, the IP holders have the right to stop you in the event that you are "distributing". Simply put, the second it runs on PCs other than the creators, that is when it becomes a legal problem.

Again we are talking legal not moral or correct. The point is the second someone makes it available for download, the IP holders have the right to sue, and have a very high chance of winning. Really the only variable is whether the IP holders notice the distsribution, and whether they choose to pursue legal action.

Pretty sure that's not how copyright, and trademark works. I mean if he remade it with original characters etc... then he'd have a snowballs chance in hell, but far from a done deal (still would take enough money to have lawyers).
