  • There's a church near me that flies a pride flag. Now, I'm not Christian (or LGBTQ) so I wouldn't go to pray there, but I was happy to see it. Too many places of worship make the news for how hateful they are. It's nice to see one advertising how inclusive they are.

Again, I'm not Christian and thus not an expert on Jesus, but from what I know his message was a pretty good one. Help the poor, the sick, and anyone else who needs assistance. If more churches actually followed Jesus instead of screaming that the Bible says you should buy more guns, assault immigrants, hate people different from you, and worship Trump while giving the pastor as much money as possible, then maybe they would be in better shape.

  • I figured as much. When people (or companies) say "I don't want to be associated with statements like this," the right's response depends on whose statements they are. If they are statements from the right, then it's "cancel culture" and must be banned. If they are statements from the left, then it's just Free Speech and no action against those saying it is allowed for any reason.

It's such an obvious double standard.

  • Typically, you can't be prosecuted at a state level for crimes you committed out of state. Otherwise, any state with anti-gambling laws could arrest people returning from Vegas vacations.

The red states are trying to get around this with their "it's a civil offense to help someone leave the state to get an abortion" and "it's a crime to use public roads to have an abortion out of state," but these laws have tenuous footing at best.

Still, I fully expect some red states to pass laws banning anyone who lives in their state from going to another state for an abortion. Republicans don't care about what's legal or constitutional - only about what furthers their power over people.

  • Definitely. Republicans are big fans of "let the market decide" and big opponents of "big government dictating what companies should do" until the market decides against them. Then, suddenly, the Republicans are big fans of the government deciding what companies should do and opponents of the free market.

The levels of hypocrisy never fail to amaze me.

  • So that goes both ways, right? Right wing businesses can't refuse to deal with companies just because they are "woke," right?

Time for someone to form Woke Antifa Rainbows, Inc and then sue right wing companies for refusing to do business with them.

  • Was that before the flight of any doctor whose practice could even touch on abortion? Because doctors are fleeing Texas and I don't blame them. If my state ruled that I could go to prison for 10 years and become a felon just for doing my job, I'd get out and go to a more welcoming state.

Sadly, this means that a lot of poorer people won't be able to get decent healthcare. Hopefully, before it gets too bad (relatively speaking) there's a political backlash that kicks the Republicans out of office.

  • Technically speaking, they deserve a lot more than Giuliani is capable of paying. He put their lives in danger in an attempt to get the election overturned. I doubt there's enough money in Giuliani's bank accounts, stock accounts, mattresses, or sofa cushions to ever fully compensate them.

Still, every last penny Rudy has would be a good start.

  • Exactly. His great reputation after 9/11 wasn't earned, but he could have coasted for the rest of his life as "America's Mayor" talking about how great he was during 9/11. People who looked into the details would have known better, but 90% of the public would have thought him a hero.

But then he needed to go all in on Trump and Trump's attempt to overthrow the election. Now, even if people don't know how he wasn't really "America's Mayor" on 9/11, they know him as the hair dye leaking incompetent conspiracy theorist of a lawyer for Trump who tried and failed to overturn the election.

Rudy Giuliani is a neverending source of schadenfreude.

  • "Look, Russia will stop fighting if Ukraine just gives up the two 'contested' provinces."

"Okay, Ukraine gave them up, but Russia now says it only wants these three more."

"Look, Russia is being very reasonable. They will stop all the fighting and even allow Ukraine to join NATO if they just get these five provinces."

"Ukraine is just a tiny country now. They might as well submit to Russian rule."

"Russia just wants this one tiny province in Poland. Is that really worth starting WW3 over?!!!"

  • And Trump isn't even the biggest problem. Oh, he's a big problem, don't get me wrong, but if it was just Trump then a second Trump presidency would likely look a lot like the first - Trump does some horrible stuff but gets in his own way and gets too distracted to do the REALLY bad stuff. It would be bad, but our democracy might survive.

With the people who are ready and waiting to act behind the scenes (Project 2025), though, a Trump second presidency would be our last real election. We might have future elections like Russia "has elections." Aka "Do you want to vote for the dictator or do you want to go to prison. You're free to choose."

This is an important distinction because even if Trump loses in 2024, the Project 2025 folks might still be around to launch Project 2029 or Project 2033.

  • That's because they think it'll only apply to "those other people" that they don't like. For example, with police brutality, the white, straight, Christian right thinks the police will only beat "black thugs" so it's perfectly fine in their book.

  • Oh, they want to target Jews also. We Jews just aren't #1 on their list. If they got their wildest dreams, though, they'd eventually work their way to the Jews.

Beyond the obvious moral/ethical/humanitarian reasons, this is why I oppose them. If they get what they want, they'll come after me. By the time they do that, though, nobody will be left to speak up for me. So I'll stop them before they even get started.

  • Sadly, there are a lot of them. Back when I was in college, a well known Holocaust denier was running ads in college newspapers saying that the Holocaust never happened. (Don't ask me where he thought those 6 million Jews went. World's biggest and longest game of Hide and Seek?)

My college's newspaper decided to run the ad. I confronted the editor in chief to ask why he'd run that. He said he needed to because it was "showing both sides of the debate." As if there was a debate as to whether the Holocaust happened.

  • Some are. Back when I was in high school (30 years ago), one kid was a huge self-professed Hitler worshiper. He told me to my face (knowing that I'm Jewish) "the only thing Hitler did wrong was not finishing the job."

I'm usually an extremely easy going guy, but my friend had to hold me back. Never before had I wanted to punch someone out so much.

  • One problem was that the CDC was banned from studying the causes of gun violence from 1997 until 2018 due to the Dickey Amendment. We should have had big studies done to see just what the problems were (I'm sure it's not just one) and what solutions might give the best results while infringing on people's rights the least. Instead, even studying why gun violence was a problem was banned.

Thankfully, the Dickey Amendment was clarified (but not repealed) and gun violence research is allowed. Still, the studies aren't allowed to call for gun control so they are still hobbled. So while new proposals based on studies can be made, gun control won't be one of them even if it would be effective.

  • No, Johnson! You get Jesus. You don't get to take Moses also! We Jews had him first. Go talk about how god told you to be like Jesus instead.

Then again, if you really want to be like Moses, gather the conservatives together and go wander in the desert for 40 years so that the rest of us can run this country without your interference. (Yes, the Moses allegory fell apart at the end, but conservatives in America aren't like Israelite slaves in ancient Egypt.)

  • Pretty much. Conservatives nowadays see themselves as perpetual victims. They are being oppressed by the liberals because society doesn't bend to every conservative whim. They are being victimized because people other than straight, white, Christian men have a say in society's functioning.

Johnson is stretching this imagined victimization into "we're essentially slaves to the liberals who are just like the Egyptians in the Bible!"

It's idiotic and 100% wrong, but it sounds good to some on the right who whine that they don't run everything anymore.

  • I'd love to see abortions be safe, legal, and rare. If people want to reduce how many abortions occur, they should find out why women get abortions and then figure out ways to help women so that they aren't in those situations.

For example, if women are getting pregnant and resorting to abortion as "birth control," then give better sex education and make contraceptives as affordable and available as possible.

Sadly, the right seems to want to make it so more women NEED abortions while less have access to them. Using birth control again, they like pushing abstinence only sex education (which doesn't work) while restricting access to birth control. Some have even been calling for making birth control illegal!

  • If the product has some danger that the retailer wouldn't know about, then they shouldn't be held responsible.

For example, suppose a store sold toasters and some had faulty wiring that caused fires. We wouldn't expect stores to personally inspect every toaster. This issue would be on the manufacturer.

However, if a product was obviously unsafe/illegal based on the description and intended usage, then the store should be held responsible. If a store stocked "Electric Bathtub Toasters - use in your bathtub - Now with exposed wiring!", then they absolutely should be held responsible for injuries caused from use of the product.

  • To save everyone time, I'll list all the criminal indictments that Joe Biden is currently facing:

And that's it. Boy, that list took so long to compile!
