  • They asked for 3 extensions and were granted them. They asked for a 4th and it was denied. Now Trump's claiming that it's so totally unfair.

He's like a spoiled toddler. If anything isn't 100% of what he wants in that moment, he'll cry about how unfair everyone is acting towards him. If only we could put him down for timeout and a nap like we might with a toddler. Perhaps he needs a diaper change? (Not it!)

  • My company switched up retirement plans and they held a seminar to explain them. The person running the seminar said that we should be putting 15% of our salaries into retirement.

Nice idea, but if I put 15% of my salary into retirement, then I wouldn't be able to pay my bills. I'm not living extravagantly or anything (buying something for $20 for my enjoyment seems like a splurge to me). Still, whenever I seem to be getting on a better financial footing, life throws me a curve ball. Need new hearing aids ($3,600). New a new dryer ($750). Might need a new car soon.

So either I need to be paid a lot more, I will be working until I'm 90, or I put away the money and go deep into debt but can retire. (Just kidding. I'm nearing 50. I likely won't have enough to retire. Maybe when I'm 80.)

  • Only if the House didn't impeach him and the Senate didn't convict.

So Biden would also have to kill as many Congressional Republicans as possible to prevent any impeachment vote from succeeding. This "legal theory" is essentially saying "one murder might be criminally liable, but mass murder of political opponents is just fine!"

  • And it gets better. In the Georgia case, they are arguing that Trump can't be tried because he was impeached for that crime and a criminal trial would be double jeopardy.

Ignore for a second that his impeachment wasn't over the Georgia crimes. Trump's lawyers are arguing that you need to impeach/convict before you can criminally charge, but if you impeach then you can't criminally charge.

Their legal theories are the equivalent of "I object! It's devastating to my case!"

  • Or just go one step further and have all Congressional members of the opposing party killed.

Biden would never do this and I don't want him to, but let's suppose that Trump's "legal theory" is correct and Biden wakes up tomorrow thinking that he's sick of dealing with the Republicans' malarkey. He orders some military groups known to be loyal to him to round up every Republican member of Congress along with certain Supreme Court justices. They are all executed. Then Trump is brought in and executed as well.

Now what would happen? Would Biden be charged with mass murder? No, he's immune to prosecution. You need to impeach and convict him first. But nobody remains who would impeach him. So he's totally immune as he appoints left leaning Supreme Court justices and expands his "early Republican retirement program" to right leaning Federal judges.

Again, I wouldn't want him doing this, but according to Trump this would be totally legal.

  • Right. This isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. One of the most frustrating things I've seen progressives do is not get everything they want and then rage quit politics without realizing that this is even worse than only getting some of what you want.

In one respect, I wish progressives could be more like Republicans. After Roe v Wade, Republicans didn't rage quit politics. They pushed for abortion bans, lost, tried again, lost, and repeated until they got some small concession. Then they used that to slowly, over 50 years, build until they overturned Roe.

Now, obviously, I disagree with their goals. However, I can admire the long term effort put into this. If progressives could do this (with much better goals, of course), we might be able to do some amazing things. Yes, it would be slow at first and that can be frustrating, but imagine if we could have a country 30-50 years from now as far to the left as the Republicans are to the right (but much more sane).

  • Also, if Biden's age is a factor, then Trump's age has to be a factor too. Trump is 4 years younger than Biden. That's nothing at their age. It would be like me saying that I'm 48 and a friend of mine is 50. All other things being equal, there would be little to no difference between us at our ages.

Of course, all other things aren't equal. Trump has demonstrated some worrying signs of cognitive decline. For example, claiming that he's running against Obama or claiming that he beat Obama in 2016. Yet the media seems to keep dismissing that as "Trump says weird stuff all the time." But if Biden has the tiniest slip-up, they'll scream "DEMENTIA" for weeks.

To me, there's another factor too. Let's say that either Trump or Biden, after winning in 2024, would have a major medical event and would be propped up Weekend At Bernie's style. For whatever reason, they'll still appear to be President, but the administration would actually run the show. Which administration would you want running things? Biden's or Trump's likely administration?

It's not even close in my book.

  • Right. For example, the Epstein fight logs show Bill Clinton and Donald Trump on the plane. If there's evidence that either one did illegal stuff, I say imprison both of them. (I'd call the flight logs suspicious activity enough to open an investigation, but by itself not enough proof to result in a criminal conviction.)

Did I like Bill Clinton as a politician? In general, yes. There was plenty of stuff that I didn't like about him, but I voted for him for his second term. (I was too young for his first term, but would have voted for him if I was older.) Still, my general feeling that he was a decent President doesn't mean I think he should get away with criminal activities.

Yet, there are so many Republicans that literally don't care what Trump has done. A video could come out definitively proving that Trump had sex with underage girls and even if his supporters accepted it as true, they'd still support him. The modern Republican party is a cult and it's scary.

  • Biden loans his son money and his son pays it back. Republicans: "THIS IS AN IMPEACHABLE OFFENSE AND BIDEN SHOULD BE IMPRISONED FOR LIFE!!!"

Trump literally advocates for assassinating his political rivals in the same week that he appears in Epstein's fight logs. Republicans: "Trump was obviously sent from God to lead us and should be able to do whatever he wants with absolute immunity! Including killing anyone he wants dead!!! MAGA!"

  • Because they assume he'll only hurt "the right people" (meaning people on the left). The second it hurts them, they'll act shocked that the leopard that campaigned on eating everyone's faces would actually eat THEIR face!

  • In the DC case Trump's lawyers are arguing that he can't be criminally charged unless he's impeached and removed first.

In the Georgia case, Trump's lawyers are claiming that he can't be charged because he was already impeached for that action and that's double jeopardy.

Ignore for the second that the Georgia crime is not what he was impeached for. Trump's lawyers are arguing that you can't charge a President unless you impeach him, but also impeaching him means that you can't charge the President.

  • Why does this sound like a cheesy teen movie? The kind where the protagonist tries to throw a party and claims some celebrity will be there. Then, when everyone decides to come, the protagonist has to attempt to get the celebrity to actually appear.

Only in the cheesy teen movie, the celebrity would make a surprise appearance at the end. In RFK Jr's version, all the celebrities laugh in his face and he's left sad and alone.

  • No, see if Biden wants to be impeachment proof, he just needs to arrange for a "group trip" for all Congressional Republicans to "a nice farm upstate." He can be generous and include tickets for the conservative Supreme Court justices.

Biden would never do this and I wouldn't want him to, but Trump is arguing that this would be 100% legal.

  • My guess is that they'll rule he doesn't qualify for being kicked off the ballot due to the 14th Amendment, but then they'll "balance" that ruling out by ruling against Trump in his "Presidents are criminally immune no matter what they do" case. As if they'd ever rule in favor of that theory with a Democrat in the White House.

  • It's a habit I formed back when I frequented Reddit. You sometimes couldn't tell if someone was being serious or not and since I didn't want anyone to mistake my sarcasm for MAGA-ism, I used /s liberally.

  • I also "fear backlash" if he runs and loses the election. He won't hesitate to get his followers to commit acts of violence. According to the logic of the "for fear of backlash we should allow him to run" people, we should just annoint Trump President for Life. After all, we can't do anything that might cause MAGA to become violent, right? /s

  • people tend to get more conservative as they age.

My father has been telling me this for decades. When I was 18, he said that I'd become a conservative at 21. In my 20's, he said I'd become a conservative in my 30's. In my 30's, it was in my 40's. Now that I'm 48, he says that I'll become a conservative "when I get older." (I guess he got tired of updating the date.)

Meanwhile, if anything, I'm getting more liberal. If you asked me in 2010 about gay marriage/marriage equality, I probably would have answered "marriage is for men and women, gay people should be allowed to have civil unions, though." Obviously, that's not my current position. Now, I think any two consenting adults should be allowed to marry (with very few exceptions - e.g. cases of incest). I didn't get more conservative as I aged, I got more liberal.

Furthermore, if people get more conservative as they age, how does one explain Bernie Sanders?

Yes, some people get stuck in the past and can't keep up, but there isn't a hard and fast rule that says people move to the right as they age.

  • Look, sure the Republicans lied about wanting to ban abortions in the case of rape, incest, and the life of the mother. Sure, they lied about not wanting a national ban. And sure they lied about not wanting to prosecute women. But you can totally trust that they aren't lying this time! Ignore the hand behind their back. They aren't crossing their fingers. They promise!!!
