  • And that was an actual term before he co-opted it. It would refer to the random blogs that claimed to be news sites that would post laughably false articles with doctored photos and completely made up quotes.

There was stuff with Hillary saying things that she literally never said, but it was "reporting" that she said it. The minor right wing sites would then cite these articles and the major right wing organizations would quote them. It would be proven false (easily) but by then they had moved onto the latest thing Hillary "did" (according to these sites).

Trump took this very useful term and twisted it into "anything I don't like is fake."

  • Case in point: The QAnon Shaman is running for a US Senate seat. Seriously. He wants to be a legislator in the building that he was sent to prison for physically attacking.

  • But do we all have the right to this weapon borne by an eagle? I don't see any historical laws saying that you can't have trained eagles with deadly weapons flying overhead everyone at all times!

  • You and I agree he's ineligible, but if 2016-2020 has taught us anything, it's that our laws and rules mean nothing if the courts don't enforce them.

What happens if Trump appointed judges decide that Trump still can be on the ballot? What if they decide that insurrection isn't disqualifying because reasons?

Trump could get into office again and shred any bits of the Constitution that he hasn't already ripped up. And this time, he might decide that he's not leaving office and judges he appoints could agree.

  • I'm sure Trump's spokesman will walk back the Nazi talk....

    :

Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said of anyone who compares Trump to Hitler or Mussolini that, "their entire existence will be crushed when President Trump returns to the White House"

So they're just doubling down on the Nazi then.

  • You and I might agree that it applies, but how much do you want to bet that some Trump appointed judges decide that it doesn't apply and kill any effort to remove him from the ballot?

  • Don't forget us Jews. Whenever some wannabe dictator starts talking about the vermin in society, they inevitably wind up attacking Jews.

Oh, and they'll eventually attack Christians as well. They'll decide who is and who isn't Christian enough. Are you Catholic? Sorry, that's not the right form of Christianity. You're Baptist but don't go to church every week? Into the camp you go. You go every week, but your pastor spoke out against Trump? Into the camp for you!

  • And, eventually as all these things tend to go, Jews like myself will get rounded up. They already use "Soros" and "globalists" to hide what they are really saying. If they get enough power, they'll stop with the code words and round up all Jews for some imagined global conspiracy against them.

Of course, most Jews are left of center, so many of us will have already been rounded up already.

  • For the longest time, I wanted to see the Percy Jackson series adapted. (I'm not counting those movies!) Thankfully, it is and the first book/first season will be coming out in December. I hope they are able to expand to the entire universe that Riordan made. There are so many stories that would be great to see.

  • Vaccines work too well for their own good in some respects. They are so good that most people don't remember the bad old days when these diseases ran rampant. People think "measles" and say "so you get some sores for a few days and then fully recover, no biggie." They hear "whooping cough" and say "you just cough for a bit, so what?"

Too many people don't recall the horrors these diseases inflicted. I count myself among those who don't recall first hand, but I've read enough accounts to be thankful that I haven't had to experience this.

Also, the anti-vax movement started small. They stopped getting shots and the world didn't end. This was actually because everyone else was still supplying herd immunity, but they spun it as "see how you don't need vaccines?"

As more and more people joined, the herd immunity started to falter. Now, it's breaking down entirely and diseases once thought gone are making a comeback tour.

And all because these people would rather trust someone online with no medical experience, but who tells them what they want to hear rather than actual doctors.

  • Not only that, but more disease spreading means more chance that the disease could mutate and render our current vaccines ineffective.

Imagine if a vaccine resistant polio or measles started spreading. Sure, you're vaccinated against the diseases, but the virus just laughs as it sidesteps your protections and infects you anyway. People refusing vaccines endanger all of us.

The exception to this rule are people who refuse for legitimate medical reasons. For example, if they are allergic to the vaccine components or have immune system issues. They should be able to legitimately refuse and the rest of us would protect them with our immunity.

  • Trump is accidentally right about the threat coming from inside this country. It absolutely is. But if he wants to see the threat, he needs to look in the mirror and look at his supporters - not at the left.

  • "Look, Trump wants 100% of the power and to send 100% of the people on the left into camps. Why don't you compromise by giving him 50% of the power and then he'll only send 50% of you to camps? ... Now he has 50% and wants 100%, you should compromise and give him 75%..."

(And I say this as someone who thinks compromise can be a useful political tool. But only when the group you're compromising with is bargaining in good faith. The Republicans of today - and certainly MAGAs like Trump - aren't bargaining in good faith.)

  • I doubt they'll be immune to Trump's rampage if he gets back into office. He'll be out for the blood of anyone who ever reported on him in a negative way. CNN, NY Times, MSNBC, etc will likely have their offices raided due to criminal prosecutions. The crime? Criminal defamation of Lord Trump.

But in true "First they came for" fashion, they'll keep acting as though this is all normal until they get rounded up. Then, they'll expect the rest of us to stand up for them. Sadly, by that point, we'll likely be in camps/prisons ourselves.

  • Same with Judaism. The fetus isn't considered alive until it emerges from the woman. Until that point, it's considered potential life and not as important as the woman's actual life. In fact, the fetus is considered part of the woman the same way as her hip bone is part of her body.

In Judaism, getting an abortion isn't considered murder like some Christians think it is. Then again, those Christians don't care what other religions (or people who aren't religious) think. They want their religious views to be the law of the land.

  • Ignoring him won't make him go away. He's (sadly) his party's frontrunner by far. If we just close our eyes to the threat he poses, we'll just repeat 2016 and Trump will get into the White House again.

Trust me, I want to be able to ignore him. Unfortunately, we're not at that point yet

  • This shouldn't even reach the Supreme Court. It should be easy enough that lower courts should rule definitively against it and kill this ordinance.

  • It's a mix. I've personally seen online accounts that are otherwise progressive claiming that all Jews are valid targets for vandalism because of things Israel did.

I've also seen many news reports of Jewish college kids harassed by peers getting threatening while protesting against Israel's actions and for Palestinian rights. (Two things I would agree with, but that I wouldn't march for if I feel like my safety would be at risk merely because I'm Jewish.)

I don't doubt that there are elements (be it the American right, Russia, or someone else) trying to exasperate any divisions on the left. Of course, if the right thinks that Jews will see elements of anti-semitism on the left and go running to the right, they are sadly mistaken. Like I said, there's some anti-semitism on the left (likely magnified by bad actors), but the vast majority is on the right. And the right has the more extremist anti-semitism - with actual Nazis and people who want to make all non-Christians second class citizens (at best).

  • Seriously? So if two women or two men walk down the street holding hands and then kiss each other, they could be arrested for "lewd conduct" while a heterosexual couple doing the same exact thing is left alone? This city ordinance sounds like it's just waiting for a legal challenge.

  • What they did was actually worse than just saying "No." They said that former felons could get their voting rights back if they paid all their fines. Except, they didn't provide any way of figuring out what fines you owed. One government official might say you're good to go, but then you submit your paperwork and they discover a $5.12 fine three counties over and you get arrested on a felony again.

At least with a firm no, former felons would know where they stand. With this system, they technically can vote again, but practically can't unless they want to risk going back to prison.
