It is disappointing. But at least we have a lot of options!
Was kind of hoping people might reply to this thread with more actual reasoning for their faves, from the pov of us all enjoying Liftoff and wanting to find the next best thing. But it's pretty much just turned into a list of all the apps, whoops!
Maybe it's something wrong with my account. For example I'm logged in, I go to browse All or Local, and bam! Full of communities I already have blocked. And trying to block them again through Boost itself seems to do nothing either. It's weird.
Yeah I fiddled with it a fair bit when it first came out, there's nothing hugely wrong with it it just doesn't "feel" right, you know? I think given that I was a RiF and then Liftoff user, maybe my brain craves a bit of jank lol
Oh interesting, last time I did a proper trawl was when everything was on fire and the devs were almost begging people to stop using Jerboa so they could concentrate on Lemmy core. Will have to check out the changes since my knowledge is clearly out of date, cheers.
To add to Otter's reply, one of the best ways to keep growing after the initial announcement is simply just to make sure you mention and properly link it whenever it's relevant to the conversation.
a) Lets people know the community exists and b) gives them a way to go straight there without having to faff about.
Trying to get to grips with the full horror of what my todo list has become while I was basically incapable of doing anything other than wheeze and sleep for the last couple of weeks.
It's not pretty 😬
BUT a couple days ago I got random act of kindness-ed by a fellow Lemming, and while it has technically added a fair amount of tasks to the list that now need doing asap, it was an amazing thing to do for a stranger and is going to let me move forward with a personal project that means a lot to me. So a long todo list isn't always terrible, is the moral of this story.
Idk how long it's been since you last tried (or where you're from) but I can say as someone who's been veggie in the UK for over 20 years, every year it's getting easier to make the switch.
We're getting new meat substitutes all the time if that's your thing, there are ever-increasing amounts of veggie and vegan food porn for cooking inspiration, and in a lot of countries you can basically just assume that any given restaurant is going to have at least a couple of veggie-friendly options (wasn't the case for the US when I was last there but that was in 2015 so has hopefully changed - they even put surprise meat in my egg-fried rice over there)
So if it's been a while you might find it easier this time round just based on sheer availability of options!
Remember though, it's ok to do it gradually too you don't need to go full cold turkey. Reducing meat consumption is a great goal regardless of whether you ever become a full vegetarian or not, and anecdotally I've known a couple of people who found telling themselves "I'm just reducing meat, not banning it" made it a lot less pressure and the switch became easier.
Anyway this is getting to be a long comment because I'm avoiding work as per usual. The main thing I wanted to say is GOOD LUCK!
Played through it with my husband, usually on an evening after work, and discovered that no matter how stressed or annoyed you are the Outer Wilds intro / menu is just instant relaxation. Like sliding into a whole other world where everything is going to be ok.
Just a nice easy Christmas and New Year, at home just me and my partner, no responsibilities, no social obligations, cozy pyjamas, playing games and relaxing together and generally living actual real life for a couple weeks instead of the constant treadmill.
That's why I picked it too. Hoping Raccoon can fill the gap with a bit more development time 🤞
