  • Kinda depends. I'm still relatively beginner so I make a lot of stuff from thrifted fabrics, for example I just made a matching top and skirt from a bedding set that cost me 50p. Obviously it does take time but I enjoy it so don't begrudge time spent, plus I'm getting much faster with more practise!

But it's also the fact that you're learning to make things that actually fit you, and that work for you. So they're not wearing through on parts that are too tight, or being forgotten in the bottom of the wardrobe because you don't feel comfy in them. And if anything does start to fall apart, you've got the skills to repair.

I know a lot of sewists who make themselves very expensive items, but they know what they're doing and are making much better quality clothes than you'd get in a shop so they'll last basically forever.

  • Look up the Patti Pocket Skirt. You're welcome.

  • From experience: as long as the dress is nice and roomy you can sit as prawn-like as you want.

  • I (woman) have been learning to sew for a while mostly due to the indignity of never having pockets unless I put them in myself. But I also took the plunge and made my husband a novelty Christmas shirt last year and honestly even though it seemed like it would be terrifying it was surprisingly straightforward! Now he can have all the ridiculous colorful shirts he wants.

Basically I'm saying yes, learn to sew, it's bloody brilliant.

  • Yeah it's kind of a pre-emptive thing, so when (if) Threads does turn on federation, they're already blocked.

  • Honestly I meant to get that all the way back when it came out and somehow never did, but you're right this is the perfect time. Thanks you're a terrible great influence!

  • Completely agree. Just rewatched this one recently and somehow it seems to hit harder every time. I'm not a parent, and have no real relationship with mine, but the story and acting are so superb they briefly make me realise what that might be like.

  • Just made myself a new skirt, even the sewing pattern came without pockets. I put massive ones in anyway.

  • On mobile I use the Tusky app and there's a follow icon in the top right when you're viewing a hashtag feed. Imagine it depends which app you're on though!

  • mander.xyz might be up your street

  • It's not really supposed to, and a lot of the time it is working as intended and things are basically instant. But yeah when it starts to run behind things can get frustrating.

  • Two Lemmy accounts for my two main groups of interests. Neither NSFW, just different interests. Same two usernames on Mastodon too. Different instances so hopefully if one goes down the other is still ok, but also just because it's handy being on different instances when there are federation issues.

As far as managing them, I'm mostly on my laptop and always have two users running in my browser so they've both just got a pinned Lemmy tab and a pinned Mastodon tab now. On mobile, Liftoff (for Lemmy) and Tusky (for Mastodon) handle multiple accounts fine albeit with a few improvements needed here and there.

I copy paste my Lemmy sub list into a spreadsheet once a week as part of my general life end-of-week tidy up. Export Mastodon stuff every now and then too. Just in case!

  • Love rhythm games, hadn't heard of this one, and I've been looking for new things to download ready for going on an internet-free holiday soon.

This recommendation was basically made for me. Thanks!

  • You're not wrong about this still needing a lot of work. But just fyi in the meantime sorting by "new comments" turns up a pretty good mix for me.

  • Aha! Sounds like we just have different definitions of "content creator", that just sounds like a normal account to me. In that case, you'll be fine, just remember to hashtag everything for discoverability.

Fyi it's also a custom to make an intro post when you join, tag it with #introduction and just let people know what to expect from your account. Load it up with the relevant tags so people watching them find your account, it's usually a good way to kick things off and get some initial followers.

    Enjoy! :)

  • In my experience (not an expert but I've been active on there across two accounts for most of a year) it's going to depend on what approach you take. If you're there to advertise your content only (not sure if it's video, podcast, blog or whatever but same applies regardless), you probably won't have a great time. Pure brand accounts aren't as much of a thing there as on Twitter.

If you're there to meet interesting people and share interesting info that maybe happens to be related to what you're selling but for the most part isn't directly pushing it, you'll be fine. Though you'll probably want to find an instance that allows self-promo, since some don't.

But bear in mind the culture around things like content warnings, alt text on images, that sort of thing. You might find that the sort of content you share on other sites isn't going to perform as well due to having to slap a warning on it for eye contact, for example.

  • Kind of completely depends on what topics you find "interesting". I never quite got the point of following people, myself, it's why I wasn't on Twitter. But thankfully on Mastodon you can follow topics via hashtags instead and just dip into the interesting convos without having to deal with whatever other nonsense people talk about on a daily basis cluttering up your feed.

Interestingly that's also how Twitter used to work, but I understand it's quite different nowadays so people struggle a bit with changing back to topic-focused.

  • I really enjoyed the first half but have to admit it lost me a bit by the end, it just sort of kept going for a bit too long for me I think. Husband, meanwhile, was very taken with it and has been recommending it to anyone who will listen!

  • Just watched Men last night, I guess this other one is going on the list now!
