What is the “rule” at the end of the sentence for? The best interpretation I have is: “The ‘this better be one damn good game’ rule”, i.e. this better be a damn good game, given its hype and how much it cost.
Memorability per se does not interest me. I have read all the Culture novels and like them for the immersive experience and story telling, but I have since forgotten most of the plots and characters. So what? I can always read them again.
No one on this geology team will be going to the moon, they are not astronauts. There are no geologist-astronauts on this first mission. This was one of the criticisms of the Apollo program, especially from scientists. Harrison Schmitt is the only geologist to have been to the moon, on Apollo 17, the last Apollo mission, in 1972, and he is the last person to have walked on the moon.
I hope in future the Artemis programme sends more geologists to the moon for some proper science and not just trophy collecting.
Is this because you find it hard to believe that anyone could do such a thing? This is the attitude that meant it took so long for Letby to be caught, as the senior hospital managers ignored warnings from doctors, seemingly on the assumption that she must be innocent, because the alternative was too awful to contemplate. But some people really are capable of such awful acts. Fortunately they are relatively rare.
You are probably right, but the more they keeping pushing me to use Edge, the more I don’t want to use it. My experience of it is mostly negative, as a hindrance that gets in my way with its constant nagging, and having to disable it.
I still don’t think they will be able to physically force the perpetrator to be present for the sentencing and victim impact statements, as this could result in very upsetting and unpredictable scenes in the courtroom for the victim’s families, if the prisoner chooses to freak out. Instead, I think there will be additional punishments for non-attendance. But if you are likely to be given a whole life sentence, what additional punishment could be effective compared to that?
There are different types of average, median being one of them. What you are thinking of as the average, is probably the mean. Median, mean and mode are all types of average.
I think the Star Trek holodeck went much too far with this - holograms indistinguishable from reality? How is this meant to work with the characters constantly interacting with their surroundings?
