  • I am not normally a fan of long form videos unless I'm in the mood for it, but Philosophy Tube is my go to. Thanks to her, she (he before she transitioned) actually taught me what liberal really means, socially progressive but economically conservative.

  • There are still federal and state judges blocking many of Trump's executive decisions, and half of population willing to resist. The checks and balance is still working as intended even if politicians and the other half of people itself had been compromised. I still wouldn't call democracy itself completely dead yet.

  • Some Lemmy users even go so far as say there is equivalent of Reichstag fire event in US. Trump is only in office for one month and I didn't see the Congress get burned, pinned the blame on an opposing group, and then made Trump demand for absolute power. Is Trump bad? Yes, but let's not exaggerate. There are still checks and balance working as intended (many courts are still blocking many of Trump's executive decisions after all). People need to relax and get a cool head first. Because decisions made on emotions will only blunder.

  • It is unlikely that the constitution will be amended. Democrats still (and will always) hold roughly 50% of seats in the Congress. So any proposal to amendment will not pass. However, there is a possibility of coup if Trump does not want to step down.

  • Surely the fact that he's 19 and a senior advisor in a state department is more damning than his lineage?

Well firstly, it is the media, they love to sensationalise so they came up with this attention grabbing headline.

And that Trump is very obviously friendly with Putin?

At first I thought both simply have the same ideological inclination, and the speculation that Putin has a kompromat on Trump is a meme. Now, I am increasingly becoming convinced on the latter. Not even Mussolini bent this low to Hitler.

  • Oligarchs are not unified. Some companies are heavily disaffected like pharmaceuticals thanks to RFK. Tariffs will also hurt most businesses' bottomline. Trump's policies only benefit certain oligarchs (tech companies and Musk) so the other oligarchs who get pissed off will band together to support someone friendlier.

  • He really is with Project 2025 and dark enlightenment stuff. He wants everything to regress to 19th century world where there were plenty of snake oils (there was no regulation back then after all), women were to stay home to make babies, and tariffs only worked when the norm was that if you don't agree-- gunboats will be sent to force you to agree.

  • TLDR: carbon capture is a technology we should use after we stopped polluting to fix the earth.

Yeah, it would just give people a blank check to use more fossil fuels. It is kinda like a diabetic person who acquired the disease later in life, and still not adjusting their lifestyle because drugs mitigate the effects anyhow. And the person will keep eating unhealthy food or not exercising.

  • Sometimes I wonder why this flat earth stuff refuses to go away

Because for these people it is more about inflating their own ego. They know what they believe is wrong, but they like to think they are better by going against the grain. It is about having the notion of "I know something that you don't" which they imply to others by pushing the flat earth nonsense.

  • If you learn more about the effects of alcohol, it is arguably as bad as, if not worse than, cigarettes or marijuana. Ethanol is literally poison that damages liver, and it impedes with the electrical signals between brain cells. The Temperance movement had a point to ban alcohol.

The only reason we are not going to ban alcohol again, is because banning it had proven to have more dire consequences. Gangsters took monopoly of the black market. And tainting black market alcohol to deter people from drinking alcohol is dangerous, just as bootleggers also made their own alcohol but the process is unregulated.
