  • Lootboxes are literally gambling and redeeming them even look like slots.

Allowing the selling/trading of skins allows for a black market to emerge to convert them to currency. Valve created the conditions for this exploitive system to emerge and does nothing to stop it. You can debate whether valve has a duty to stop it but they are forever a black eye on gaming in my eyes. Just because they sell cheap games twice a year doesn’t white wash them

  • I like mastodon a lot. I have basically found my hashtags, people and news sources to follow and so my feed is always filled with content to read. Engagement is fairly good on my instance, at least with popular topics.

But I only have 20 followers in 18 months of being on it so if that kind of thing is important to you then it can be something of a negative. Harder to build an audience without an algorithmic recommendation feature feeding your posts to strangers. I find that to be a positive though.

  • Sorry that happened to you. I haven’t had any bad experiences but the right to repair is tantamount so that way you can still repair phones long beyond the time frame the manufacturer arbitrarily decides to support

  • Pokémon Generation 1 and 2. They story, gameplay, and mechanics are concise and not hand-hold-y, the designs are the ones I grew up with, they can easily be played on a phone emulator and have so many rom hacks that I never will totally experience everything they have to offer

  • Well put, I think at first as well I felt like the term was a bit immature and used a bit too liberally when it first started picking up steam in 2023.

It really does describe a phenomenon that is becoming so widespread that I’ve softened on it and embraced it (as long as it’s used correctly)

  • I’m pretty sure that there are serious vulnerabilities in the netcode of the original MW that makes playing it online on PC unsafe. I haven’t ever seen an authoritative source confirm it however the last time I tried to play it online probably 4 years ago. There were all sorts of malicious redirects when trying to join servers from the browser

  • I will always love United Offensive, it was the first game I ever played online. Modding the game got me into programming and managing servers led me to networking and got me to the career that I have today. I’m not a game pass subscriber but it would great for more people to be able to experience it

  • Bridgy Fed exists to act as a bridge between AP and ATProto/blue sky if you want to use ATProto from Mastodon. Sadly, though, the bluesky user has to also follow the bridge for you to be able to see their posts from mastodon.

  • Hog barns or farrowing houses typically don't have high roofs and you can accommodate more pigs in the same amount of space.

It’s more of how things were engineered and for what uses. IE if the barn is also used for hay or equipment storage in addition to accommodating livestock

  • UBI would have some inflationary effects, but if you stuck it through, it would be less than the UBI payment in the first place.

The problem is getting people to stick to it because unfortunately, for Americans, if you give them $2000 a month in UBI but their purchasing power doesn’t go up by what they perceive as what $2000 is worth; they will punish you in the next election.

I think the expanded child tax credit in 2020 could be a good example to follow for what the roll out of UBI would look like. But we let it expire despite it lifting so many kids out of poverty even if just temporarily and freaked out about inflation so hard that I have my doubts that our American society would ever have the fortitude to be able to implement a permanent UBI

  • Your instance. That’s what is great about the fediverse is that if there isn’t an instance that meets your needs, you can host that niche yourself and still have access to the same content (assuming you can stay on good terms with the other instances)

Personally I don’t have a problem with Lemmy.world’s moderation choices but if I did, I could always self host. But quite frankly if I had to face the risk of hosting an instance, I’d probably make a lot of similar choices

  • I don’t know if I’ve seen split opinions on Naughty Dog Crash games. It’s pretty much always been praised. Post Naughty Dog is a different story as well.

I think I like the author’s point of comparing the nostalgia most gamers feel for series like Crash Bandicoot compared to the nostalgia that modern day viral games will bring Zoomers and Gen Alpha but I also can’t help but be deeply offended by it.

  • If devs want to make an alternative to CoD, they need to make a fun single player FPS first and make a small but fun multiplayer component.

The problem is that publishers see the dollar signs from CoD and Fortnite and want to make a MP scam game without realizing that gamers only want to be scammed by Fortnite and CoD because they were actually fun before they became a scam.
