  • My issue with the Wii U was that it was almost, but not entirely, portable. For some games, you could play entirely on the tablet, without the TV even being on, as long as you stayed relatively close to the TV. The issue was that you would start getting lag spikes when you tried to push the range and not enough games supported playing entirely on the tablet.

I would not object to a console that is whole house portable (probably via LAN, like the PlayStation Portal). I almost never play outside of my house and when I do, it is always at a location where I can connect a box to the network, like a friend's home or a vacation rental.

  • But there is zero reason why I shouldn’t be able to run a 7-Eleven and sleep on a cot in the back if I so choose.

Why can't you? I don't believe that there is any law saying you need to have a home in a residential zoned area (anti-homeless laws say that you cannot use public space as a home).

As far as I know, zoning laws just say that you cannot sell or rent out a property in a commercial district as residential. That is a false advertising/minimum allowable quality law, much like you cannot sell the meat of an a diseased animal. Commercial areas likely don't have the infrastructure (schools, utilities, safety) for people to live in.

  • I have a plug-in hybrid. I try to charge while running errands. I (almost) never can. In my area, most stores don't have chargers and those that do, typically have a slow charger with 2-4 spots. Those spots are always taken.

  • 3,000 games, but are any of them good? Last time I looked, it seemed to all be free-to-play, gacha games.

  • That is probably the best solution, but the devil would be in the details. Who would decide on the government? If it is via democratic elections, then the Jews would have a clear majority and could push for policies favoring them. If it is the UN, I believe Muslim nations are the majority and can influence policies to further Arab interests.

Also, it would not take 40-60 years of not just living as one nation, but forced integration. It would require not just living in the same areas but doing something as drastic forcing all marriages to be interfaith. You would need to destroy people’s identities as Jews or Arabs and replace it with a single national identity.

Remember, they were one nation for the last several decades of the 20th century and it just made them more hostile. As we learned in places like Yugoslavia, forcing old enemies to become a single nation sometimes just makes all the hate grow and ferment.

  • It has been tried quite a few times. Inevitably, one side or the other does something mildly antagonistic, the other side retaliates, and they are back at war.

Maybe the answer is to do the opposite? Start arming both sides to the gills? Any nation going through nuclear disarmament drops of the nukes in no man’s land between the two? Make it so if either nation so much as sneezes wrong, not only is the region glass, but humanity ends in a nuclear winter, so every country in the world has a stake in keeping the peace?

/s, but I really don’t have much hope for peace, sadly

  • For most people, childhood tends to be a time before they had the full burden of adult responsibilities. They had chores to do around the house, but typically, they were not managing the house hold budget. Long term decisions were more about what classes to take next year or what type of major will I want to pursue. They were not thinking how the financial and lifestyle decisions they were making would affect them during the later parts of their lives.

  • Great for walking the dog at night, in suburban or rural settings. A phone flashlight is annoying to juggle while also controlling a leash and impossible when I need to scoop poop.

  • Dentist hate this one little trick… because it is not actually as good as flossing. Floss picks tend to have a very tight piece of floss. It is good for cleaning the surfaces directly between your teeth, but not the curved parts of the teeth.

I hate regular floss (or rather sticking my fat fingers deep into my mouth), so flossing sticks are better than nothing.

  • As far as I know, many Americans don't even own a stove top kettle. If they need to boil water, they do so in a saucepan.

  • The important things for me to back up include:

    • photographs and family videos (literally irreplaceable)
    • legal documents and other such paperwork (can be replaced, but it would be a pain)
    • various notes on how to accomplish occasional tasks (not too hard to figure out again, but it is convenient to spend 1 minute copying a command out of a text file instead of spending 15 minutes to find all the correct command line arguments)
  • When I was last shopping for a chair, a "gamer" chair was, by far, the best chair that I could find for my size (average height, but stocky and overweight). None of the chairs at my local office store went up far enough for my knees and the arm rests did not support my elbows at table level.

I am sure that their are high end office chairs that would fit me, but I did not want to do much research. I had just read a good overview of gaming chairs from Ars Technica and just went off of that.

Every chair I have had at work has the same problem. At one job, they had ergonomics experts come in to help set up our desks at a new office. The expert sat me down, fiddled with my chair, and apologized because it was hopeless.

  • A hate crime is a crime that specifically targets a member of a protected class due to their membership in a protected class. It warrants additional punishment since it may make members of the protected class more hesitant to participate in civil society (for example, after hearing about this murder, a Muslim parent might be afraid to let their child go to a friend's house).

  • The NBA tries to be "woke" to appeal to the kids. They pushed out a team owner who was openly racist. They don't seem to tolerate racist and homophobic jears from fans.

Most of the players are black, so they don't expect them not to comment on BLM or to all stand for the national anthem. They have had some problems with players being anti-Semitic, they have punished them enough to get them to keep their mouth shut.

  • And yes iMessage has way higher image quality than sms, just like RCS has

MMS resolution seems fine for me and on Android, if I try to send a photo via SMS, my phone will alert me and suggest that I send that particular text (with a photo attachment) via MMS.

  • For now. Facebook has said that they plan to disable end-to-end encryption in WhatsApp at some point, so that you can receive messages from people using Facebook Messenger.

  • I miss the old days of Trillian, a single pane of glass UI for all the major IM networks, cross-service meta contacts, and the messaage history was kept client side.

  • Milk

    Jump
  • No, subscription based, like World of Warcraft.

  • I know (and have discussed it with) plenty of people who lived in the former USSR. Everyone I spoke to agreed that it was a mess.

Of course, there is clear selection bias in who I spoke to (they are people I am friendly with and most of them reside outside of Eastern Europe) and all of them only experienced the Soviet system after it had gone through Stalin.
