I didn't agree with their decision at all at the time, but now that I realize they made it a little while after it gained widespread adoption and people stopped using it because "Signal isn't actually secure!" ... seems like people were expecting a secure messenger to be, well, secure. So they would chat about anything and everything thinking "I am using a secure messenger, these messages can't be read..." and tech ignorance is a dangerous thing if you're trying to be secure. I would've preferred a colored window and un-closable message for SMS chats, but oh well. I like that they've introduced usernames so you don't have to give out your real number.

What are we talking about here?

Emotional detachment of things one has no personal involvement in, in order to see the situation as clearly as possible. If you are living in Gaza or have family or a good friend there then yes it's much harder and maybe nearly impossible. I can also understand the need for emotional attachment to feel purpose by campaigning against something, but again, attachment is the enemy of objectivity.

It's impossible to avoid bias completely. It's very much possible to recognize your bias and train yourself to have emotional detachment from a given subject. Ask a Buddhist monk, or a seasoned intelligence analyst.

Philosophical ramble below, you can stop reading here if you're not in the mood.

Most people unfortunately never get to the stage of realizing they can detach themselves from emotional bias, so they read and believe whatever they have already read and believe and want to be true.

Side note: it's much easier when you're on the spectrum, or learned as a child to shut your emotions off (I'm not sure this can be learned in adulthood). It seems like many victims of childhood abuse take it in the other direction - emotional overreaction.

I'm quite positive going to Russia would be dangerous for me regardless of my ethnicity or background 😄. They really do have some neat brutalist art and architecture, but I can see that from the safety of my couch with Bald & Bankrupt.

Fully agree. I'm taking a trip to Russia soon. It's my families motherland, such a beautiful country with a rich history. People keep calling me a spy, and it's hurtful, especially when they pull out their identification. -- Jokes aside I really do agree. Internet culture has come up with some of the greatest, and dumbest, collectivist thoughts and this meme is a great example of the latter.

I won't say WW3 is inevitable, but something big is coming. Russia is draining our resources (including mental focus of agents) in Ukraine, Iran and Saudi Arabia are draining our resources via Gaza and the Red Sea, China is stepping up their cyber attacks and North Korea is readily collaborating with all of them. Meanwhile the flames of propaganda are no longer being fanned on Ukraine, but on Israel, one of our most touchy allies.

If you register to vote in the new state, as long as you don't cast a ballot in the old state, you are fine. A number of people are in your situation. You can vote in your "other" state by absentee ballot, or your "current" state by registering by the deadline defined in your current state. Extensive article about it here.

You are legally allowed to have multiple residences in multiple states. All that matters is you follow the rules, which means not voting more than once, and either registering an absentee ballot in the other state or registering in the new state.

Citizenship is based on country, not state. Unless you left out being a dual national (citizen of another country) I don't see why you can't vote.

Some states have fickle laws about absentee ballots and it may require you to take a day trip on voting day.

And vice versa? I see them both, but Lemmy is more left leaning than reddit, although less political most of the time. Conversations are heating up now because it's election season in the US. Honest question: when you browse Lemmy do you typically read from your (lemmy.world) instance, or do you read from All instances, or do you have a curated list of subs from different instances? I try to stay off the political subs, and in fact the only reason I posted this article is because someone linked to a lemmy.world politics post and I ventured into the politics sub on lemmy.world and was struck by how fierce the left/right division was. Most of Lemmy doesn't seem to be like that, a comment here or there sure, but not constant like the politics sub.

They're just smartphone apps as a way to interact with Lemmy, versus visiting it in a browser. If you mostly use Lemmy on desktop, search 'lemmy frontend' for other options.
