  • Might I suggest that instead of mocking the user and ensuring they don't post here in the future after they have learned more, that you sticky a comment about threat models and give constructive criticism about their setup? That way you don't run away this user, who is willing to dedicate their free time writing free posts which benefit the community, and you also educate those who are reading the post who may not know better.

  • Well, for starters...

TailsOS is not for "fun" purposes.

Highly debatable opinion, all tech can be fun.

"NSA style" zomg cool blonde hair tech whiz kid?

    zomg condescending and immature much?

This post is a massive joke.

Said the mod of the subreddit to the curious, kind, helpful, thought-provoking user who posted wondering about other people's setups, and even prefaced their post with:

this thread is dedicated to help people learn and grow in their privacy journeys!

Don't focus solely on me! Since this happened in another one of my posts, I want to mention that this thread is not designed to pick apart only my setup. The point is to contribute your own and help others. That doesn't mean you can't still give suggestions for mine, but don't prioritize mine over another.

Be respectful! Some people are early on in their privacy journey, or have a lax threat model. Just because it doesn't align with yours, or uses some anti-privacy software, doesn't mean you can downvote them! Help them improve by giving suggestions on alternatives.

Be polite! This falls under "Be respectful", but be kind to everyone! Say please, thank you, and sorry. Lemmy is really good about this, but there will always be someone.

  • It's interesting innit, that the reddit migration to Lemmy gave the most vocal ideologues a place to gather, and a reason not to go back. I wonder if the discussion on Reddit is a bit more nuanced now?

  • I just like to see the lemmings in action.

But, since you asked nicely, I'll rephrase it as a conservative would. As I think someone should believe what feels right to them, but at least understand the mind and motivations of your opposition, otherwise you will fail in your goals. That's something not one of the 10 downvoters and 5 commenters have been able to do.

The far left seeks to eradicate the fundamental principles of individual initiative and free enterprise in favor of a collectivist agenda, they're in favor of legalization of all drugs and the murder of children and don't understand that a functioning society is a fragile house of cards. They think that children growing up without one or both parents is perfectly fine, and the child will in turn be a well-adjusted adult, regardless. They want to open the borders to let every spy, murderer, and rapist into their neighborhood. The far right aims to preserve traditional values and defend against the erosion of societal norms by those advocating for radical change.

Internet proselytization is this generations' version of Vietnam-era I’d Love to Change the World.

I'd love to change the world

But I don't know what to do

So I'll leave it up to you.

I get it. The state of the world right now is a sad mess. But if you're going to fight a war you can win, you must first understand the basics.

  • FTA:

Tom Ford's Tejus lizard-embossed leather jacket from the Tom Ford SS2023 menswear collection, based on the collar, zippers, and cuffs (see detailed pictures below). It's not lizard or crocodile skin as some people might have suspected — most exotic skins are banned in California — but is, in fact, just embossed calf leather. Still, it doesn't come cheap: it retails for a cool $8,990 (or just over ten shares of Nvidia stock).

  • By number of users, Lemmy is the worst forum for mobbing I've ever come across. You'd get similar mobbing on Reddit but there were 500x the number of users.

I assume it's because a mass of people came here for a staunchly idealistic reason simply because it was the alternative to reddit.

  • So you don't even have sandboxed GPlay Services on your main profile?

I do like how all profiles have all their own data, so if you logout another (not main) profile then that second profile data is encrypted again until you enter the password.

  • Same here, besides the going back inside part, that's a smart move. I read something about Waze sunsetting so I assume that means Google/Apple maps have police warnings now, but I don't know that for certain.

  • As far as a currency or store of wealth, Bitcoin is shit. Satoshi was/were an idealist(s), and for them it wasn't about the money, it was about the idea. Decentralized proof of concept that anyone on the internet can access and can't be censored without extreme global geopolitical cooperation. They chose to make it like a currency (Bitcoin) for adoption purposes, but the mathematical and technical concepts behind it can be used for any transfer of information that needs to be reliable, proven (signed), and decentralized, which makes it ideal for some things we are already using, and concepts we can't even imagine yet.

The idea sparked other blockchain concepts such as Monero which is actually designed to be used, like digital cash with tiny fee of pennies, not as a store of wealth or prospecting. It is essentially anonymous as the sender, receiver, and amount are never known except to those with access to the wallets.

Smart contracts still have a long way to go but have some very interesting uses as well.

Why does being around in 100 years matter for Bitcoin, though? It's unlikely that Bitcoin will even be around in 100 years and Satoshi likely knew that or would have made the halving rates longer. Last halving was 2020. In about a month (next halving) block rewards will be halved from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC, which puts upward pressure on miners to innovate (find new ways of reducing energy consumption and increasing hashing power), increasing scarcity, and, historically, increasing price.

  • Just to explain it to people who don't understand how it works.

The point of the mining rewards is to make the Bitcoin supply infinite, while giving the price time to rise and Bitcoin to gain adoption. Once that 21m coins is created, no more can be created, so the price should stabilize and rise over time as less and less Bitcoin is around.

  • No?

You've never known someone that has had their house broken into?

Do you live in privileged suburbs or is the UK just a magical place with no home invasions?

Or is it just a matter of not caring if someone does?

  • No argument on that point, we're pretty docile through years of bread and circus, and complacency conditioning propaganda¹. George Floyd protests could have been the outrage and protesting in Paris over a cheese manufactured getting wrongly fined by the government, but here it took mandatory lockdowns with everyone out of work and ruin-of-civilization pandemic fears.

I get it. Wish I could personally change it, but the most I can do is vote, and call and email my representatives. If everyone did that every issue, we'd have a different country. Unfortunately see point ¹

I own a gun, a revolver, it was my uncle's service weapon. I've taken it to the range a few times but besides that it sits locked in the safe unloaded and safety on, and I don't carry it around. I can't see myself ever needing to actually use it, but it's nice to know it's there in case there were ever truly a threat to my family. In places like the UK, I assume people have home defense weapons in the form of knives, billy clubs, pepper spray, etc. I've seen the damage it can do at the range, and it's scary. I'm scared of it. I don't ever want to become not scared of it.
