  • No, not really. Funding is no guarantee of political success, some of the most expensive campaigns in US history have been failures. People don't want the status quo upset, that's why it's the status quo. People are continually voting for it.

  • Yeah but western elections aren't rigged are they. You get a lot of choice. The two final candidates are just one part of that in the US system. Elsewhere there is much more variety, but the people tend to vote for safe, mainstream moderate candidates (with notable far right exceptions), which is why they consistently govern Europe and North America. Sadly, the world isn't just confused populist leftists. Everyone does actually just want what they've all voted for.

  • I'm so tired of seeing thread #35738272 of Lemmy not understanding how a liberal democracy works. 'WHY ARE WE NOT VOTING OUT THE OBVIOUS FASCISTS AND VOTING IN THE SOCIALIST UTOPIA RIGHT NOW, CLEARLY DEMOCRACY IS BROKEN'

  • Is that a shot at me? I'm pretty sure I can't be contrarian if my opinion is the vastly more mainstream one. Most people don't advocate political violence like that. I'm not sure a lefty can be the one calling people crusty, it's your end of the aisle pioneering that state of being. And I'm not old, sorry.

  • Outdated definition, now it's used for people pretending to be something they're not more generally. Right wingers getting into camo and doing drill pretending to be military. Terminally online left wingers pretending they could punch a nazi or start a revolution.

  • You should look at polling more deeply. If you chuck an easy question like 'Are humans responsible for climate change?'' you'll barely get 50%. But if you then actually pose a piece of actionable policy like 'Would you support banning the sale of ICE cars in 2035?' You'll get 30%. So no. The will of the people is not meeting their climate commitment.

This will probably be the case for your other examples too. Public opinion is never as unified as you're making it seem.

  • Bristol has a very left wing lean, I've seen the graffiti around. It's a vocal minority. Public opinion is mainly indifference but condemnation of both sides, maybe a bit on Israel's side right now. The way Hamas has conducted themselves I would argue has seriously damaged the perception of the Palestinian cause.

  • This is why I personally think that what they do IS fair use and transformative and not a substitute of the original product. I have to go and watch the original video to not have the goblin in the corner making inane comments and pausing it when I'm trying to take in the video.

  • I'm an avid meat lover, but if you don't want to think about it and find it weird, maybe become vegetarian. I guess it's people with your concerns that they need to reduce meat consumption.

Personally I'd kill a cow and eat it's tongue then suck the egg out of a chicken cloaca no problem!
