I've been considering this as my New Years Resolution. I'm ashamed that I might be too weak to go through with it. The convenience is just so...manipulative and infantilizing. I am perfectly capable of buying anything I need from a physical store front.

I coach kids, and false reporting has become an issue recently. We take every report seriously and have to investigate/escalate each case individually. I have seen two different teenagers admit to maliciously reporting another kid when their stories were questioned or enough time had passed that they no longer felt vengeful toward the other person. The systems for reporting bullying/abuse/crimes are a huge step in the right direction from the past strategy of ignorance. I don't know how to impart to kids that false claims damage the entire social system we have in place for keeping them safe.

Not that the actions of the Taliban ever "make sense," but doesn't having less trained midwives lead to a decrease in population caused by pregnancy complications? This is just additional cruelty to women with absolutely no benefit.

This is such a terrifying and sad way to go. Just looking for her cat. Probably trying to bring it inside to be warm since it is winter out.

Sinkholes are such a sneaky and unexpectedly scary thing. There are so many horrors mother nature can throw at us - earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, wildfires. And yet, a small unseen hole in the ground can lead to a massive cavern.

Access to infinite knowledge from the internet, sitting right in everyones pocket. Sometimes, I will find myself talking to someone a few generations older than me. And they will say something along the lines of "I wonder how many..." and then just let the idea rest. Because they still act like they would have to go to a library to look up the fact. It amazes me! We don't have to wonder. I can look it up right now! It'll take me a few seconds.

Alternatively, I cannot stand when I am talking to someone and make a statement to which they respond: "I don't know..." or "I'm not sure if that's true". This is often a tactic I see older men use (often talking politics) to cast doubt on a younger or female person. And unfortunately, back in the day that was good enough to derail a conversation. Nowadays though... Don't believe me? Let's look it up. We don't have to take your word for it. People forget they can be fact checked in real time.

In my opinion, the bullying is still as alive as it ever was. Kids are just better at masking it. There is definitely more acceptance for LGBT, neurodivergent, and kids that would be considered outside the "norm" nowadays. But, teenagers have a strange capacity for cruelty to one another, it is just a different type of cruelty than past generations.

A friend of 8 years stole a few dresses from me while we were out on a trip. They weren't necessarily expensive, just cute sundresses that I had bought after saving up some money with my first big job. After returning home, I texted her to get one back because it was the dress I wore on my first date with my (now) husband and was sentimental. I was willing to part with the other ones. Her response was "Since I already have it with me, it would be easier if I just keep it and not have to find a way to get it to you."

We lived ~20 minutes apart. After that, I was ghosted. She continued to wear the dress and post photos online, blocking me so that I couldn't see, but other friends saw and reported back to me. Safe to say she was not invited to the wedding.

Trump and his cronies will weaponize anything they can to get their way. Better not give them any more power.

I have noticed the general public is now very tolerant of sweet drinks. I know that is not the only problem. I was never allowed soda or coffee or sweet tea growing up, so don't have much of a tolerance for them now. But when I try popular coffees (pumpkin spice this or vanilla chai that) or cocktails at most restaurants, I am surprised that people don't send them back and ask for less sweetener.

As an infrequent treat, I can understand it. But if you are drinking that much sugar on a daily basis, it must seriously screw with your system. I am sure lots of people are drinking a huge amount of calories and don't register how different that is from past generations.

Desperately wanted to watch Young Frankenstein in the week before Halloween. It's just the right kind of relaxing spooky comedy. Tried to find it legally. Honestly tried for longer than I am willing to admit. For a few years, the subscriptions were just so convenient, and I didn't have to worry about getting a virus or knowing which link to click. Well, no Young Frankenstein was the final straw. Bring on the high seas!

Immediately thought of 1899 when cancellations were mentioned. It was so damn good. Atmospheric, moody, mysterious, well written. I am fucking livid that the story won't be completed.

Wow, I remember riding this the first summer it was open. It felt like every other commercial was about Kingda Ka.

I don't want the masses from Reddit to migrate to Lemmy. I want people currently on Lemmy to post and comment. More engagement is what we need. No one is going to move to Lemmy if they see the top posts are hours old with only 100 upvotes and no comments.

If they didn't leave Reddit by now, they like the new Reddit experience.

I think people forget these talk radio shows are still a thing. A lot of us, especially Millenials and younger, are streaming our own music/audiobooks/podcasts in the car. But there are a lot of people who listen to talk radio.

Of course they escaped any repercussions for their shitty product. There is too much money invested in self driving vehicles to pull back on account of safety now. They will just continue to push them onto our streets and everyone will be an unwilling guinea pig for this flawed tech.

They actually argued that the car performed better than a human driver because it braked quicker than any human could respond. Trying to ignore the fact that it ran this woman over, and once she was under the car, the car no longer recognized her as a human and dragged her underneath. Taking the humanity from behind the wheel does not remove falibility. It just removes critical thinking and empathy for the obstacles on the side of the road that are human fucking beings.

My great grandmother recently passed at the age of 100. Summers in her garden were something truly special. They had a small backyard, but the victory garden covered most of it. If I ever reach grandma status, I hope I will have an impeccable garden and carry on the tradition. Thanks for the story, it brought back so many memories. I would kill for a fresh tomato sandwich now.

I completely forgot about this game, god it was fun.

I find it interesting how many pieces of media have been inspired by the book Killer Angels. Firefly joins Gettysburg (perhaps that one is obvious), and even Ken Burns sprawling Civil War Documentary.

Yes! That is so annoying. Then again, I do think it's better that more people from the small towns have the opportunity for public transportation, not just city to city. In Europe they manage to serve lots of locations and keep travel times short. It's possible, just an expensive commitment.
